Arkansas Razorbacks Bio

The Arkansas Razorbacks football team representing Arkansas football should have a relatively quiet day on Wednesday after signing all but one commitment from its 2022 recruiting class during the early signing period. Arkansas signed 20 players on the first day of the early signing period, which began on December 15. According to 247Sports, the Razorbacks are ranked No. 22 in the country and No. 9 in the SEC. Arkansas has three open scholarship spots in its 2022 class, with 25 scholarship players.

These can be filled with high school signees, juco players, or transfers. Myles Rowser was the only commitment who did not sign in December. The four-star safety from Belleville, Michigan, in the Detroit area, has been committed to Arkansas since March 2021. He chose the Razorbacks over offers from Michigan, where he had previously committed, Alabama, Arizona, and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Razorbacks were charter members of the Southwest Conference (SWC) in 1915. The conference also included teams from Texas (Baylor, Rice, Texas, Texas A&M) and Oklahoma Oklahoma, Oklahoma A&M. Southwestern (TX) would also join, but leave the following year.  1916, 1917, and 1919 teams were led at quarterback by “Arkansas’ greatest athlete,” Gene Davidson.

The Razorbacks didn’t have a winning conference record until 1920, and they didn’t win the conference championship until 1936. Schleuter informed coach Fred Thomsen that he was eligible, but an SMU player recognized him as a former Cornhusker during the game.  The Hogs did accept an invitation to the 1934 Dixie Classic, a precursor to today’s Cotton Bowl Classic. Because of their proximity, Arkansas and Ole Miss became rivals.

Although not a member of the SWC, Ole Miss played Arkansas on an irregular basis until a yearly series began in 1952–1961. During the 1938 season, the Razorbacks replaced The Hill, their 300-seat stadium, with Bailey Stadium, named after Arkansas governor Carl Bailey. For one game, it was known as University Stadium before being renamed in honor of the governor. This stadium still exists today, though it has been heavily renovated, as Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, the Razorbacks’ current home.

In the Frank Broyles era (1958–1976) Missouri head coach Frank Broyles was hired as the Razorbacks’ head football coach in 1957 and held that position for the next 19 years. Under Broyles’ leadership, Arkansas would become a national power, winning several conference championships and a national championship. Arkansas would split the 1959 SWC Championship with Texas. During the season, Arkansas only lost to Miss.

The Hogs traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, and defeated Georgia Tech 14–7 in the 1960 Gator Bowl, avenging an earlier Cotton Bowl Classic defeat. Barry Switzer served as a team co-captain. Some, including the University of Arkansas Chancellor and student in 1958, John White, see the Razorback football team during this period as a revival of Arkansas, which was recovering from the Little Rock Nine and racial segregation issues The 1960s were the best decade in Arkansas football history.

ESPN ranked Arkansas as the 19th most prestigious program in college football, but if only this decade was considered, the Hogs would be ranked 10th. 1960 brought another SWC title and a Cotton Bowl Classic invitation for the Hogs, who were ranked as high as seventh during the season. The Razorbacks lost to Austin to bring the championship to Fayetteville. The Hogs were defeated by Duke 7–6 due to a blocked extra point. The following season brought another SWC championship shared with Texas.  The Hogs were defeated by the Longhorns 33–7 as well as the Ole Miss Rebels, earning an invitation to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Rebels, earning an invitation to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 10–3The Crimson Tide had been declared National Champions prior to the game, as was customary at the time. The Hogs would challenge this system in 1964 when the same Alabama team won the AP title before losing the Orange Bowl to the Texas Longhorns, a team Arkansas defeated in Austin, Texas during the regular season.

Arkansas defeated Nebraska 10–7 in the Cotton Bowl Classic. ill. Sam Pittman is the current coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks. As of 2019, the program has 1 claimed national championship awarded by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and Helms Athletic Foundation in 1964, 1 unclaimed national championship awarded by the Foundation for the Analysis of Competitions and Tournaments in 1977, 13 conference championships, 45 All-Americans, and an all-time record of 716–504–40.
