Thomas Arthur Darvill was born on June 17, 1982, in Birmingham. Ellie, his mother, is an actress who worked with masks, puppets, and live acting as a member of Cannon Hill Theatre at the Midlands Arts Centre and toured the world when he was a child. She is also the puppeteer and voice of Why Bird from Playdays. His father, Nigel, was a Hammond organist who worked with artists such as Edwin Starr, Ruby Turner, Fine Young Cannibals, and UB40 From 1993 to 2000, Darvill attended Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire.

Career Earlier work Darvill joined Stage2 Youth Theatre Company when he was ten years old. He was a member from 1991 to 2000, and had an early job on CITV in 2000, presenting the continuity links between the shows; he was billed as Tom Darvill at the time.

Darvill made his professional stage debut in Edmund White’s Terre Haute, which ran at the Assembly Rooms during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as condemned criminal Harrison. Nicholas de Jongh of the Evening Standard and Susannah Clapp of The Observer both praised his performance.


Darvill appeared in Terra Haute’s 2007 Trafalgar Studios transfer. His performance earned him a nomination for Best Newcomer at the 2007 Evening Standard Theatre Awards. Darvill played Rob in the 2007 monologue Stacy, which The New York Times described as “compelling.” Later that year, he co-starred with Christian Slater, Helen Baxendale, and Matt Smith in the Vaudeville Theatre production of Swimming with Sharks (which gained him a London Newcomer Award nomination).

Darvill made his television debut in the ITV crime drama He Kills Coppers in 2008. In the same year, he starred as Edward “Tip” Dorrit in the BBC series Little Dorrit.

Darvill debuted as Rory Williams, the Eleventh Doctor’s companion, in the fifth series of the BBC’s science fiction show Doctor Who (reuniting with Swimming with Sharks co-star Matt Smith). He became a regular character in the sixth series, and it was confirmed that he would return in the seventh series before he and his co-star Karen Gillan (on-screen wife Amy Pond) left in the fifth episode.

Darvill appeared as a stable groom in Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood and as Mick Gallagher in Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll (both 2010). In the summer of 2011, he played Mephistopheles, “an agent of the Devil in human form,” in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre’s production of Doctor Faustus, which was later released on DVD.

Following his departure from Doctor Who, he was cast as vicar Paul Coates in the drama Broadchurch, alongside David Tennant and Olivia Colman.  On April 19, 2013, he took over the lead male role of Guy from the Broadway musical Once, opposite new co-star Joanna Christie. The two performers also performed a number and presented the award for best scenery at the 2013 Tony Awards.

Darvill reprised the role in the West End production from March 17 to May 10, 2014. Darvill was cast as time traveller Rip Hunter in the series Legends of Tomorrow in March 2015. By the end of the third season in 2018, he had been written off the show. He did, however, return in 2021 for the show’s hundredth episode. Darvill played Oscar Lindquist in the West End revival of Sweet Charity in 2019.

Work in music and audio Darvill is also a musician and composer, having written songs and music for the Bush Theatre and composing the score for Che Walker’s play The Frontline at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2008 The musical Been So Long, based on Ché Walker’s 1998 play, premiered at the Young Vic in June 2009, and another collaboration, The Lightning Child, premiered at the Globe in September 2013. Darvill had collaborated with Walker on the show’s songs and music for several years since they first met at RADA.

The musical debuted at the Latitude Festival in July and then moved on to the Traverse Theatre in August. MTM gave Darvill a Judge’s Discretionary Award for his music.  Darvill assisted in the promotion of Fyfe Dangerfield’s solo album in 2010, performing with him on sessions for Graham Norton’s show and Xfm.

Darvill has worked on a variety of radio and voice projects, including Doctor Who audiobooks. In December 2011, he appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Burning Both Ends as Keith Moon. He played Gulliver in Radio 4’s Gulliver’s Travels and Sam in the short film Penguin in 2012. He worked with playwright Sam Holcroft on a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, which premiered in November at the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton
