Hollywood cinematographer and TV director Joseph Caleb Deschanel, ASC was born in the United States on September 21, 1944. Six times he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography. A representative of the American Society of Cinematographers, he serves on the Library of Congress’s National Film Preservation Board. Emily and Zooey Deschanel, both actors, are the products of his marriage to Mary Jo Deschanel, which began in 1972. Deschanel is the son of Ann Ward (née Orr) and Paul Jules Deschanel, and he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His French father was from Oullins, Rhône, while his American mother was from New York City. Deschanel was brought up in the Quaker faith by his mother.
