Born in the United States on August 15, 1979, Carl Michael Edwards II is a former stock car racing driver. As of his most recent race, he was driving the No. 19 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Before that, he raced for Roush Fenway Racing in the No. 99 Ford Fusion. He has won the NASCAR Busch Series championship once, in 2007, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship once, in 2011. Famously, when Edwards wins, he jumps backwards out of his car. Edwards was born in Columbia, Missouri on August 15th, 1979. In 1997, he earned his diploma from Rock Bridge High School. After receiving some financial aid from the state, Edwards changed his mind about education and enrolled at the University of Missouri in his hometown of Columbia. Edwards dropped out of university after three semesters of studying engineering because it was impeding his pursuit of a career in racing. Edwards was a substitute teacher on the side while chasing his dream of becoming a race car driver before he made the transition to full-time driving.

In 2002, Edwards got his big break when he drove for MB Motorsports in seven NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races. In the seven races, his best result was eighth place at Kansas Speedway. For Bost Motorsports, he made one additional Busch Series start at Gateway International Raceway, where he ultimately placed 38th. But it was enough to get Edwards a full-time spot driving the No. 99 Ford F-150 for Roush Racing in the 2003 Truck Series season after he won his maiden race at Kentucky. Along with his three race victories, he was named the season’s Rookie of the Year and ended up eighth in the final point standings.
