American retired professional baseball player Carlton Ernest Fisk, often known by the nicknames “Pudge” and “The Commander,” was born on December 26, 1947. From 1969 to 1993, he was a catcher in Major League Baseball with the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. He became the first player to win the American League  Rookie of the Year award in 1972. The game-winning home run Fisk hit in the 12th inning of Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, when he famously flapped his arms in the hope that the batted ball would stay fair, is what made him most famous.

With 351 home runs, Fisk held the record for the most by a catcher in history when he retired. He formerly held the record for the most games played at the position of catcher, among other records relating to age or longevity. For the most years held at the position, Fisk continues to retain the AL record. Fisk earned three Silver Slugger Awards, given yearly to the top offensive player at each position, and was selected to the All-Star squad 11 times. In 2000, Fisk was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
