The New England Whalers, originally headquartered in Hartford, Connecticut, was founded in 1972 and joined the fledgling World Hockey Association (WHA). In 1977, the Whalers made history when they signed hockey icon Gordie Howe, then 49 years old, to play for three seasons with his two sons until Gordie retired in 1980. The Whalers were one of four clubs to be acquired by the NHL in 1979 when the WHA merged with the older league due to financial difficulties.
Its first season in the NHL, the club was known as the Hartford Whalers and made the playoffs despite finishing with a losing record. The selection of Ron Francis with the fourth overall choice in the 1981 NHL draught was a bright point amid this period of misery. Francis played for the team for almost 16 seasons between Hartford and Carolina, accumulating the second-most assists in NHL history and earning a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Francis took the Whalers to the playoffs in the NHL on seven consecutive years between 1985–86 and 1991–92, but they were eliminated in the first round on six of those occasions. After this, the squad slumped for an extended time and found themselves back in the basement of their division.
