Cherien Dabis was born to parents of Palestinian and Jordanian descent in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1976. She got her degree in communication from the University of Cincinnati and pursued a career as a media expert and campaign worker in Washington, DC before deciding to follow her true calling and become a writer instead. Cherien Dabis decided to pursue a career in filmmaking after completing her MFA in Cinema at Columbia University in 2004. She debuted with the short MEMOIRS OF AN EVIL STEPMOTHER (2004), which retold the Snow White story from the perspective of the evil stepmother, much like LITTLE BLACK BOOT revisited the Cinderella story. Afterwards she produced and, more importantly, wrote for the series “The L Word” (2006-08), in which she depicted the everyday life of a Palestinian girl.Here we are, at last, with the debut of the very first feature film. AMERRIKA (2009, picture) stars Nisreen Faour and Hiam Abbass as a Palestinian single mother and her adolescent son as they navigate life in an abandoned city in Illinois.
