 Bio

The Chicago Bulls are a professional basketball team in the United States based in Chicago, Illinois. The Bulls are a member of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Eastern Conference. The Chicago Bulls are the city’s third NBA franchise, following the Packers/Zephyrs (now known as the Washington Wizards) and the now-defunct Stags (1946–1950). Today, the Bulls occasionally don the Stags’ throwback blue and red jerseys. The Bulls played the majority of their home games at the International Amphitheatre during their first two seasons before relocating to Chicago Stadium. The Bulls put together the pieces necessary to be competitive over the next few years, though they never quite reached the top.

The Bulls were a tough, defensive-minded team in the 1970s, led by hard-nosed defender Jerry Sloan and forwards Bob Love and Chet Walker, point guard Norm Van Lier, and centre Tom Boerwinkle. Despite this, the team won only one division title and never advanced to the playoffs. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, the team had fallen to the league’s basement. Without a simple coin flip, the Bulls’ fortunes would have been irreversibly altered. In 1979, the Bulls lost a coin flip to determine who would receive the first pick in the NBA draught (Rod Thorn, the Bulls General Manager, called “heads”). If the Bulls had won the coin toss, they would have chosen Magic Johnson with the first pick; instead, they chose David Greenwood with the second pick. Artis Gilmore led a Bulls team that included guard Reggie Theus, forward David Greenwood, and forward Orlando Woolridge. Following Gilmore’s trade to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for centre Dave “Mean” Corzine, the Bulls implemented a high-powered offence centred on

Theus and soon expanded to include guards Quentin Daly and Ennis Whatley. However, due to the Bulls’ continued poor performance, they decided to pivot, trading Theus during the 1983–84 season. Michael Jordan’s era, 1984–1998 The Bulls selected Michael Jordan with the third overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft. Jordan is widely regarded as basketball’s greatest player of all time. The team’s fortunes changed dramatically in the summer of 1984, when it was selected third overall in the NBA draught, behind Houston and Portland. While the Rockets selected Hakeem Olajuwon and the Blazers selected Sam Bowie, the Bulls selected North Carolina Shooting Guard Michael Jordan. With new ownership in the form of Jerry Reinsdorf and General Manager Jerry Krause, the team decided to rebuild around Jordan.

Jordan set franchise records for scoring (3rd in the league) and steals (4th in the league) in his rookie season, while also winning the Conference Central Division. On January 16, 1966, the team was founded. The team plays its home games at the United Center, which is shared with the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks (NHL). The Bulls achieved their greatest success in the 1990s, when they were instrumental in popularising the NBA on a global scale. They are renowned for possessing one of the NBA’s greatest dynasties, having won six NBA titles between 1991 and 1998, including two three-peats. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and coach Phil Jackson led each of the six championship teams. The Bulls are the only NBA franchise to have won multiple championships and never lost in the NBA Finals.

The Bulls were the first NBA team to win 70 games or more in a single season, and they remained the only franchise to do so until the 2015–16 Warriors. Numerous experts and analysts rank the 1996 Bulls as one of the NBA’s greatest teams. After winning their sixth NBA championship in 1998, the Bulls dynasty that defined the 1990s was dismantled prior to the 1998–99 NBA season due to the NBA lockout, and the team has since been unable to replicate their previous success.

Throughout the 2000s, the franchise struggled, but showed promise in the early 2010s under the leadership of Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, culminating in a 62-win season in 2010–11. However, due to key player injuries and departures, the franchise was never able to build on that success and has since sunk back into mediocrity. Michael Jordan and Derrick Rose both won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award while with the Bulls, giving the Bulls a total of six MVPs. Bulls rivalry teams include the Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and Miami Heat. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Bulls’ rivalry with the Pistons was heavily publicised. Their rivalry with the Knicks was prominent during the 1990s, whereas their rivalry with the Heat was prominent during the early 2010s.

The team acquired John Paxson as a point guard and drafted Charles Oakley as a power forward during the offseason. They combined with Jordan and centre Dave Corzine to provide the Bulls with the majority of their offence for the next two seasonsJordan returned for the playoffs, leading the Bulls to a 67-15 victory over the Larry Bird-led Boston Celtics. Though the Bulls were swept, Jordan set a playoff single-game record with 63 points in Game 2, earning him the nickname ‘God disguised as Michael Jordan’ from Bird.Scottie Pippen was chosen fifth overall in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. After scouting Pippen prior to the draught, the Bulls engineered a deal with the SuperSonics to acquire him in exchange for the eighth pick, Olden Polynice, and future draught pick options. Pippen would go on to play a significant role in the 1990s Bulls dynasty. Krause traded a 1987 draught pick to the Seattle Supersonics for an additional pick in the 1987 NBA Draft during the 1987 off-season for the draught picks.

He selected small forward Scottie Pippen with the fifth overall pick in the first round, and centre Olden Polynice and power forward Horace Grant with the eighth and tenth overall picks, respectively, in the first round. The Supersonics acquired Polynice. In 1987–88, with Paxson and Jordan in the backcourt, Brad Sellers and Oakley at forward, Corzine at centre, and rookies Pippen and Grant off the bench, the Bulls made a splash, winning 50 games and advancing to the Eastern Conference semi-finals, where they were defeated in five games by the eventual Eastern Conference Champion Detroit Pistons. Jordan was, however, named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player, the first of five such awards, for his efforts. The 1988–89 season marked the second consecutive year in which significant off-season transactions occurred. Charles Oakley, a popular power forward who led the league in total rebounds in 1987 and 1988, was traded to the New York Knicks in exchange for centre Bill Cartwright and a draught pick that the Knicks used to acquire centre Will Perdue.

This move infuriated Jordan, who refused to credit Cartwright, despite the fact that Oakley was one of Jordan’s closest friends and was viewed as the young superstar’s bodyguard. Paxson, Jordan, Pippen, Grant, and Cartwright’s new starting lineup took time to gel, winning fewer games than the previous season but making it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they were swept in six games by the eventual NBA champion Pistons. nto a lockdown defender and a capable scorer, particularly on the fastbreak. On the sidelines, Doug Collins was relieved of his duties and replaced by assistant Phil Jackson. Stacey King, a rookie centre, and B.J. Armstrong, a rookie point guard, were also selected by the Bulls in 1989. With these additions and the starting five from the previous season, the Bulls advanced to the Conference Finals and pushed the Pistons to seven games before being eliminated by Detroit for the third consecutive year.

Without Scottie Pippen’s migraine in Game 7 (which resulted in Pippen playing poorly), the Bulls might have beaten the Pistons. 1991–1993: The first three-peat championship By 1990–91, the Bulls had exhausted their excuses and were on a mission. They set a franchise record with 61 victories and cruised through the playoffs, sweeping the defending two-time NBA champion Detroit Pistons in the conference finals and defeating the Magic Johnson-led Los Angeles Lakers in five games in the Finals on June 12, 1991. Michael Jordan won both the regular season and championship MVP awards to go along with his fifth consecutive scoring title. In 1991–92, the Bulls won their second consecutive title, setting another franchise record with 67 victories

games in the Eastern Conference finals to advance to the Finals for the second consecutive year, where they defeated the Clyde Drexler-led Portland Trail Blazers in six games. Jordan won the regular season and championship MVP awards, adding to his sixth consecutive scoring title. In 1992–93, the Bulls won their third consecutive championship in six games, highlighted by John Paxson’s game-winning shot in game six against the Phoenix Suns. Jordan was named Finals MVP once again after setting a Finals record with over 41 points per game in the series. He also tied Wilt Chamberlain for the most consecutive scoring titles by winning his seventh in a row.

Jordan’s first retirement period took place between 1993 and 1995. Jordan stunned the basketball community this summer when he announced his retirement only months after discovering his father’s murder. Scottie Pippen, who had established himself as one of the league’s best players by winning the 1994 All-Star MVP, led the Bulls. Horace Grant and B.J. Armstrong, both of whom were selected to their first all-star games, assisted him. Cartwright, Perdue, Pete Myers, and Croatian rookie forward Toni Kuko assisted the trio. Despite their incredible regular season record of 55 wins, the Bulls were defeated in the second round in seven games by the eventual Eastern Conference champion New York Knicks, following a contentious foul call by referee Hue Hollins in game 5.
