 Bio

The Colorado Rapids are an American professional soccer club based in Commerce City, Colorado, a Denver suburb. The Rapids are a member of the Western Conference in Major League Soccer (MLS). The franchise debuted in 1996 as one of the chart-topping franchises. The Colorado Rapids, owned and operated by the Anschutz Corporation, were one of the ten founding clubs of Major League Soccer. Colorado’s first season, in 1996, was a disasterlast in the Western Conference with the league’s worst record. Balboa became the first player in club history to score, as well as the first to score at Mile High Stadium (in 1996). Glenn Myernick was hired as a new head coach for the following season, and Dan Counce was hired as a general manager.

Myernick and Counce brought in new players such as Paul Bravo, Wolde Harris, Ross Paule, and goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann. The team struggled at first, but rallied to make the playoffs. The Rapids pulled off two upsets to reach the MLS Cup final in 1997. In the 87th minute of the Western Conference final, Chris Henderson scored a mid-air volley past Dallas keeper Mark Dodd, ensuring Colorado’s place in the MLS Cup final. They scored in the Cup thanks to Adrián Paz’s goal, but were defeated by D.C. United in the final 2–1.Colorado’s fortunes remained a roller coaster of success and disappointment: Myernick brought in more new players, including Anders Limpar and Marcus Hahnemann, and the club advanced to the 1999 U.S. Open Cup final, only to be defeated 2–0 by the Rochester Raging Rhinos. Two of the most memorable Rapids moments occurred during the 2000 season. The first was Marcelo Balboa’s famous bicycle kick, which won the Goal of the Year award.

Chris Henderson was a Rapids player in 2004. Tim Hankinson became Colorado’s new head coach in 2001. [7] That same year, Scottish striker John Spencer joined the club. While Hankinson brought in effective players such as Mark Chung, Chris Henderson, Carlos Valderrama, and Joe Cannon, and the team made the playoffs every year, he also signed a number of expensive and unsuccessful players such as Zizi Roberts and Darryl Powell. The Rapids had a banner year in 2002, and they began the year at their new home of Invesco Field at Mile High by acquiring two powerhouses and future stars from the defunct Miami Fusion F.C., Pablo Mastroeni and Kyle Beckerman. Chris Henderson became the first player in history to score in the brand-new stadium.

Mark Chung set season records, and Mastroeni shone for the United States Men’s National Team in that year’s World CupColorado won the MLS Cup in 2010, their second appearance in the competition. The first appearance was in 1997, when they were defeated by D.C. United. They also finished second in the 1999 U.S. Open Cup, losing to the Rochester Raging Rhinos, the last time a non-MLS team won the Cup. The Rapids play their home games at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, having relocated there after the 2007 season.

When Jeff Plush was named Managing Director in January 2006, he assumed the club’s business responsibilities. To “mesh” with other clubs owned by Kroenke Sports Enterprise, the club’s colours were changed to burgundy and blue. This coincided with the establishment of a cutting-edge soccer stadium and fields complex, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, as well as the formation of relationships with Arsenal[8] of the English Premier League and Pachuca of Mexico. The Rapids had a successful first year at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, hosting numerous international exhibitions and tournaments on the stadium’s complex, as well as the 2007 MLS All-Star Game; however, the team’s record on the field was 9–13–8. The team got off to a strong start, defeating D.C. United 2–1 in frigid conditions. Herculez Gomez became the Rapids’ first player to score in the team’s new stadium.

The team had a long winless streak, which caused them to fall in the standings. Colorado finished just out of the playoffs in the end. The season’s low points included a humiliating 5–0 loss to the Seattle Sounders in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and a defeat to Real Salt Lake, which cost them both a playoff berth and possession of the Rocky Mountain Cup. For the second year in a row, the club won the MLS Reserve League. Charlie Wright, the Rapids’ general manager, added depth to the midfield and defence ahead of the 2008 season. Christian Gómez and Jose Burciaga Jr. were two notable additions. The 2008 season saw a resurgent Rapids team, which began the season with a 4–0 thrashing of David Beckham and the LA Galaxy on Opening Day. However, an inconsistent mid-season stretch in which the Rapids could not win two games in a row or lose two games in a row for 13 game caused Clavijo

off to a promising start. Things looked promising after a 2–0 victory over the Columbus Crew on opening day. However, as the season progressed, things began to go wrong. In search of a quick fix, Hárrison Henao was loaned out and Brazilian Edu was signed. Kosuke Kimura was dealt to the Portland Timbers in July. Shortly after, defender Tyson Wahl was acquired in a trade from the Montreal Impact. After a disappointing season, the Rapids looked for a late-season boost when they signed Hendry Thomas from Wigan Athletic. In late September, the Rapids were eliminated from playoff contention, effectively ending their chances of winning another MLS championship. The Rapids underwent significant changes in the 2013 seasondesires a younger, more affluent squad.

Smith took over as interim manager from Fernando Clavijo after Clavijo resigned.  Smith’s first hire was ex-England international Steve Guppy as his assistant; Guppy had previously worked as a player assistant coach for USL-1 team Rochester Rhinos. After considering potential offers from Europe, Rapids veteran midfielder Pablo Mastroeni re-signed with the club for four years. [10] The Rapids also re-signed midfielders Colin Clark and Nick LaBrocca, as well as defenders Jordan Harvey and Kosuke Kimura, to new four-year contracts.
