David “Dav” Murray Pilkey Jr., an American cartoonist, novelist, and children’s book artist, was born on March 4, 1966. He is most known for being the creator and artist of the children’s graphic novel series Dog Man and the Captain Underpants book series. On March 4, 1966, Pilkey was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Barbara, the church organist, and the Reverend David Pilkey, Sr. He has a sister who is older. Pilkey spent his whole youth attending Christian schools and was raised in a traditional Christian home.As a young kid, Pilkey received diagnoses for dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Pilkey developed the Captain Underpants persona while attending primary school in Elyria, Ohio, where he was constantly scolded for his conduct in class. Pilkey thus frequently sat at a desk in the school corridor. Pilkey participated in a national contest for young writers and won in his age division with his debut novel, World War Won, an allegorical story that was inspired by the nuclear weapons race between the US and the USSR.
