He studied molecular biology at New Mexico State University and has since worked in the fields of bio-hydrogen generation, pollution remediation for regional mine closures, advance oxidation for the cleanup of MTBE and PCE contaminated super-fund sites, reverse osmosis and electro-dialysis reversal water desalination, and algae cultivation for bio-fuel production. In 1970, he participated in the German pavilion at the Osaka World’s Fair, where he played in many of Stockhausen’s “process” pieces (Spiral, Pole, Expo). During his time in Osaka, he co-founded the Feedback Studio in Cologne with Johannes Fritsch and Rolf Gehlhaar in 1971 and worked as a technical collaborator at the Studio for Electronic Music at Utrecht University.
Together with Péter Eötvös, Mesas Maiguashca, Gaby Schumacher (cello), and Joachim Krist (viola), Johnson founded the Oeldorf Group in the early 1970s to put on a Summer Night Music series. The group’s home in Oeldorf [de], close to Kürten, had a barn where performances were held. Along with Helmut Lachenmann, he oversaw the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music’s Composing Studio in 1972. After serving as technical director of the Feedback Studio from 1970 to 1975, he relocated to Basel to lead the electronic studio at the City of Basel Music School. He stayed in this position until 1985. In the present tense, he is based in Switzerland.
