The only Western League team still playing in its home location, the club was established in Detroit in 1894 as one of the eight founding teams of the American League. They are also the AL’s longest continuously operating one-name, one-city franchise. The team, now sometimes referred to as the “Tigers,” defeated the Athletics, a semi-pro squad from the area, 30-3.  On April 28, 1896, the Tigers played their inaugural Western League game at Bennett Park, winning 17-2 against the Columbus Senators.
