Character actor Cader Edwards Davis (June 17, 1873 – May 16, 1936) was a well-known American performer in vaudeville and silent films. He also produced and wrote plays. His early success came as a dramatic orator and lecturer—earning him the titles of “poet-preacher” and “Talmage of the West”—before he abandoned the ministry to pursue a career in acting. He was born and reared in the San Francisco Bay Area. He also starred in over 50 films and created many plays and vaudeville acts. While he was in New York, he led the National Vaudeville Artists Association and the Green Room Club as their respective presidents.
He was the club’s first president and a founder of the Masonic 233 Club in Hollywood. For example, he was married to actress Adele Blood, who also acted in several of his films. Originally from Oakland, Cader Edwards Davis[a] was born in Santa Clara on June 17, 1873. William Wallace Davis Sr. was a prominent farmer, and Gideon Davis went on to have successful careers in advertising and as editor of the Oakland Herald. After brief stints as a pastor in Sullivan and Mattoon, Illinois, he moved back to his home state of California and served as the pastor of Central Christian Church in Oakland for four years. Known as the “poet-preacher” and the “Talmage of the West,” he became famous for his public speaking and lecturing skills. First he got his undergraduate degree from Washington College, and then he went on to the University of Kentucky to get his master’s.
