Born on June 25, 1951, Ernest Roscoe Dickerson is an American film, TV, and music video director, cinematographer, and screenwriter.

From their days as Tisch School of the Arts students, when he served as cinematographer on Spike Lee’s Student Academy Award–winning 1983 master’s thesis film Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, he has often collaborated with Lee. Action and horror flicks like Juice, Demon Knight, Bulletproof, Bones, and Never Die Alone bear his directorial stamp. The Godfather of Harlem, Once Once a Time, The Wire, Dexter, and The Walking Dead are just a few of the shows whose episodes he has directed. Newark, New Jersey is the place of Dickerson’s birth.

At Howard University, he majored in architecture but also attended a film class taught by Haile Gerima because of his preexisting interest in cinema.  Later, he moved to the Big Apple to enrol in the film programme at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he met future collaborator Spike Lee. Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads (1983), directed by Spike Lee, was his first feature film directing job. Since Lee remembered Dickerson, he’s worked as Spike Lee’s cinematographer on a couple more projects.
