Felix Mallard Bio

Felix Mallard (born April 20, 1998) is an actor, musician, and model from Australia. He made his acting debut in the Australian television serial series Neighbours in 2014, as Ben Kirk. Mallard relocated to the United States in 2018 and played Cooper in the American comedy series Happy Together until it was cancelled in 2019. In the Netflix series Locke & Key, he plays Lucas Caravaggio, Aiden in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, and Marcus Baker in Ginny & Georgia. Mallard was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. He has a younger sister.  He was a College Prefect at Christian Brothers College, which is an all-boys school. In 2015, he passed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) as well as a Technical Production course.

Mallard began fencing when he was ten years old.  He competed at the state and national levels, winning two bronze medals in team events at the 2012 Victorian National Champions and finishing fifth in the under-15 National Sabre Championships in 2013. Mallard was discovered by a modelling agent at the age of 13 and signed with Vivien’s Models.  He appeared in various campaigns, including a Yves Magazine editorial spread.  Mallard is a guitarist who also plays the keyboard and drums.  He is a member of the Enemies Alike punk rock band as a guitarist and singer. The band has performed in Melbourne venues, as well as at school music festivals and the Associated Catholic Colleges’ Battle of the Bands competitions.

Mallard made his acting debut at the age of 15 in 2014, when he stepped into the character of Ben Kirk in the Australian television soap opera Neighbours for a three-week, six-episode guest appearance.

Through his modelling agent, he was invited to an audition, which he unexpectedly won. He had never considered acting before, but this experience convinced him that it was something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. The following year, while still in school, he returned for another four-month guest stint.  Mallard decided to pursue acting full-time after finishing Year 12 and re-joined Neighbours as a permanent cast member in 2016.

Mallard’s love of music was woven into his persona, and he was seen playing music on the show frequently. In the same year, he starred in Xanthe Ben, a 20-episode Instagram spin-off, as well as the webisode series Summer Stories, which aired over the 2016 Christmas season.  In late 2017, Mallard finished filming his final scenes for Neighbours. Ben’s final plotline had him return to his late father’s hometown of Oakey, Queensland, to begin a new life. On April 10, 2018, his final episode aired.  On the 31st of December 2018 and the 7th of January 2019, he made two return appearances via video link.  In 2016, he appeared in the music video for Melbourne band Maefire’s song “Without You.”

Following his departure from Neighbours, Mallard starred in and produced the short film Money Is Just a Barbell, directed by his former co-star Travis Burns.

He relocated to the United States in January 2018 and was cast as popstar Cooper James in the CBS comedy series Happy Together, with Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West. When the musical band One Direction rose in success, Harry Styles moved in with television producer Ben Winston and his family to escape the spotlight.  After being offered the part by Winston, the television show’s producer, Mallard received calls from Harry Styles and James Corden, who persuaded him to take it.

Mallard auditioned with an American accent at first, but was asked to change to his original Australian accent.  The show premiered on October 1, 2018, however due to low ratings, CBS stated on November 28, 2018, that it will not commission any additional episodes beyond the initial thirteen.  The sitcom was cancelled by CBS on May 10, 2019.

Mallard went on to play Lucas Caravaggio, a 17-year-old friend of Rendell Locke, who died 25 years ago after being possessed by a demon, in the Netflix horror thriller Locke & Key. In the first part of 2019, filming took place. On February 7, 2020, it was released. All the Bright Places, a romantic drama film that began filming in October 2018 and was distributed by Netflix in February 2020, featured him. Jennifer Niven’s young adult novel of the same name was adapted into a film in 2015.

Mallard began a recurring role as Zoey’s neighbour in the second season of NBC’s musical comedy-drama Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist in 2021, as an Australian musician who had recently graduated from college and returned from backpacking in Thailand. A number of songs and dances were performed as part of the role.

In the Netflix dramedy Ginny & Georgia, Mallard portrays Marcus, an edgy 15-year-old series regular.Because his character’s father is deaf, Mallard had to learn American sign language for the part.

The film was shot in Toronto in the second part of 2019 and will be released on February 24, 2021.  Ginny & Georgia has been renewed for a second season, following the first season’s 52 million views in just 28 days, making it Netflix’s ninth most popular series. It is set to premiere in mid-late 2022. Mallard’s Instagram following grew from 90,000 to over 3 million after the show aired, indicating the show’s popularity.

Felix Mallard, a 3-year-old Australian actor who plays bad boy Marcus in Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia, a comedy-drama about the witty and dynamic mother-daughter pair Ginny and Georgia, who move north in search of a fresh start amidst a tumultuous past, has quickly captured the attention of the Gen Z masses. The events that follow are a jumble of pandemonium, secret meetings, and crucial discussions about adolescent mental health. Marcus, Mallard’s character, is quickly revealed to be more than just Ginny’s love interest, with an important underlying storyline that contrasts his overtly gruff and unfeeling exterior. The show’s renewal for a second season was just announced.

Mallard made his acting start in the Australian soap opera Neighbours and has since gone on to star in films such as Happy Together, Locke & Key, and, most recently, Aiden in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

Flaunt had the chance to speak with Mallard about his journey into acting, Ginny and Georgia’s unstoppable popularity, and his personal connection to Marcus.

How did you get into acting and realise it was something you wanted to do for a living?

Throughout high school, I never did any drama. I didn’t contemplate acting until I was approximately 14 years old, when I was doing some modelling. I was scouted by a modelling agent, and via them, they made contact with Neighbours, who said they had an audition, and they urged me to go because it’s nice to get out there and network. It was only one scene, and I didn’t know my lines for the audition, but I was very into it and got the job for a six-episode run on the show. There was a time in those six episodes where I was making fun of the character. The plot was that his father had died and he was returning to that place, and I was perplexed as to why he was so sad by his father’s death, given that he died when he was two years old, and he is now fifteen. I didn’t understand why he was going through the same agony again. So the director approached me and said, “Look, first and foremost, you’re in a new location, and it’s bringing up all these emotions and anguish.” Second, it’s your obligation to signal to the 20,000 kids watching that it’s okay to grow up without a father and feel that way.” That’s when it dawned on me that this was exactly what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. That’s all there was to it. This is the power of television and film, as well as what we can do by sharing these stories. Any project that I work on, I want to make an effort to share those concepts.

When you initially read the script, how did you feel about Marcus?

At first, I didn’t like him. I had only read the pilot when I initially read the screenplay. “This guy is rude, a jerk, and he hides behind his insecurities and puts it onto other people,” I thought. Then there was a time where I thought to myself, “oh, I know a lot of guys like this.” When I read this character, I can see them. “I know what it’s trying to say.” As I learned more about the character, I became enamoured with him because he teaches young men that they must take responsibility for their actions and that being insecure is not an excuse to be an asshole. That isn’t something I see very often, and if it is, it’s usually celebrated by the macho jock. It was both tough and rewarding to be able to subvert that. I had a lot of fun portraying it and presenting someone with a lot of barriers and masks who is eventually taken down by Ginny. So many young men put up walls as a protective mechanism to keep their feelings hidden.

Actually, I was going to inquire about it. Marcus appears to be a bit of a douche at first, but gradually he becomes more vulnerable and complex. That, I believe, is why your character and presentation struck such a chord with so many admirers. Do you believe that toxic masculinity and established gender norms in television should be addressed in the future?

Absolutely. I’m only a small fraction of it all. The straight white male is my representation. Those positions, however, should be challenged, because heteronormative tropes have been celebrated or built up in that classic image far too often. We are entering an era in which more and more voices are being heard, and tales about the actual world are being told.

Did you feel a personal connection to Marcus’ character? Did you notice any resemblances between you and him?

Marcus is fourteen-year-old me, but with a ten-fold increase in angst. There’s a lot to learn from that. My emotions were all over the place at the time. I was enraged and agitated, and everything seemed to be coming to an end. That’s how it feels at that age, and Marcus feels the same way. Marcus has a more complicated trauma, and as an actor, you use whatever is true to you to give the character vulnerability and resonance.
When you and Ginny were in the shower and had that moment of honesty with each other, it was one of my favourite sequences. What was your favourite episode’s scene?
