Band Bio

Due to numerous line-up changes, the band’s namesake, drummer Mick Fleetwood, is the only original member still in the band. Although band founder Peter Green named the band after combining the surnames of two of his former bandmates (Fleetwood, McVie) from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, bassist John McVie did not play on their first single or at their first concerts because he initially chose to stay with leetwood. When Peter Green left the British blues band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in 1967, he formed Mac in London. Green had taken over for Eric Clapton as guitarist in the Bluesbreakers and received critical acclaim for his work on their album A Hard Road. After a while with the Bluesbreakers, Green asked drummer Mick Fleetwood if he could fill in for Aynsley DunbarJudy Wong, a band member, recommended her high school friend, Bob Welch, who was living in Paris at the time.

band met with Welch a few times before deciding to hire him without ever playing with him or listening to any of his recordings. Future Games was released by the band in September 1971. This album was unlike anything the band had done before, and the band was gaining a lot of new fans in America. In Europe, CBS released Fleetwood Mac’s first Greatest Hits package, which was mostly made up of songs by Peter Green, with one song by Spencer and one by Kirwan thrown in for good measure.Though mostly composed by Kirwan, Bare Trees included Welch’s “Sentimental Lady,” which would become a much bigger hit for him five years later when he re-recorded it for hisIt also included “Spare Me a Little of Your Love,” a bright Christine McVie song that became a staple of the band’s live act throughout the early to mid-1970s. While the band was doing well in the studio, their tours were more difficult. Danny Kirwan developed an alcohol problem and became estranged from Welch and the McVies.choice but to fire Kirwan.

The next two and a half years proved to be the most difficult for the band. They changed line-ups frequently during the three albums they released during this time period. In September 1972, the band welcomed guitarist Bob Weston and m sold fewer copies than its predecessor. o Find’ and got to know each member well. It is possible thatBuckingham was able to persuade Fleetwood to let him work on their next album in a more experimental manner and to work on tracks at home before bringing them to the band in the studio. His expanded creative role for the next album was influenced by his love of New Wave music.

Tusk, a quirky 20-track double album released in 1979, was the result of this. It spawned three hit singles: Lindsey Buckingham’s “Tusk” (U.S. and Stevie Nicks’ 612 minute opus “Sara” (U.S. #7). The last of those three was cut to 412 minutes for both the hit single and the album’s initial CD release, but the unedited version has since been restored on the 1988 Greatest Hits compilation, the 2004 reissue of Tusk, and Fleetwood Mac’s 2002 release of The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac. Tusk’s original guitarist Green also took part in the sessions, but his work on the Christine McVie track “Brown Eyes” is not credited on the album. [

John Mayall agreed, and Fleetwood joined the band. Green, Fleetwood, John McVie, and Mayall had joined the Bluesbreakers. As a gift, Mayall provided Green with free recording time, during which Fleetwood, McVie, and Green recorded five songs. The fifth song was an instrumental called “Fleetwood Mac,” which Green named after the rhythm section. Green soon contacted Fleetwood about forming a new band. To entice McVie, the pair named the band “Fleetwood Mac.” McVie, on the other hand, chose to keep his steady income with Mayall rather than take a risk with a new band. Meanwhile, Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood teamed up with slide player Jeremy Spencer and bassist Bob Brunning, who was in the band with the understanding that if McVie agreed to join, he would leave. The band’s Green, Fleetwood, Spencer, and Brunning lineup made its debut on August 13, 1967, at the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival. Within a few weeks of this performance, John McVie agreed to become the band’s permanent bassist.

Fleetwood Mac’s first album, Fleetwood Mac, was a no-frills blues album released in February 1968 on the Blue Horizon label. There were no other musicians on the album (except for the song “Long Grey Mare”, which was recorded with Brunning on bass). The album charted at number four in the United Kingdom, despite the fact that it contained no singles. Soon after, the band released two singles, “Black Magic Woman” (later a big hit for Santana) and “Need Your Love So Bad.” Mr. Wonderful, the band’s second album, was released in August 1968. It was an all-blues album, just like the first, but with a few changes. Rather than being plugged into the board, the album was recorded live in the studio with miked amplifiers and a PA system.

This method created an ideal environment for creating this style of music, giving it an authentically vintage soundShortly after the release of their second album, Fleetwood Mac recruited guitarist Danny Kirwan, then only eighteen years old, from the South London blues trio Boilerhouse, which consisted of Kirwan on guitar, Trevor Stevens on bass, and Dave Terrey on drums. They persuaded Peter Green to help them finish the tour, despite the fact that they were responsible for the remaining shows on the tour. He brought along a friend, Nigel Watson, who played the congas (twenty-five years later Green and Watson collaborated again to form the Peter Green Splinter Group). Green, on the other hand, would only be back with Fleetwood Mac for a limited time, so the band decided to look for a new guitarist.

reen wanted Boilerhouse to become a professional band, but Stevens and Terrey were not ready at the time, so Green advertised for another rhythm section in Melody Maker. Over 300 people applied, but when Green and Fleetwood held auditions at the Nag’s Head in Battersea (home of the Mike Vernon Blue Horizon Club), the hard-to-please Green couldn’t Green had been disappointed that Jeremy Spencer had shown little interest in contributing to Green’s songs. Kirwan, a mature and accomplished self-taught guitarist, added a new dimension to an already complete band with his signature vibrato and unique style. “Albatross,” the band’s first number one single in Europe, was released with Kirwan. Around this time, they released their second American album, English Rose, which included half of Mr

he band did with Eddie Boyd. When the band visited the United States in January 1969, they recorded many songs at the soon-to-be-closed Chess Records Studio, alongside Chicago blues legends such as Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy, and Otis Spann. These, however, would be Fleetwood Mac’s final all-blues recordings. Along with their stylistic shift, the band was also undergoing label changes. They had been on Blue Horizon up until this point. However, with Kirwan in the band, the musical possibilities were too exciting for them to remain on a blues-only label. The band signed with the Immediate Records label and released “Man of the World,” another hit single in the United Kingdom and Europe. Spencer fronted Fleetwood Mac as “Earl Vince and the Valiants” for the B-side and recorded “Somebody’s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonite,” typifying the band’s more raucous rock ‘n’ roll side. Immediate Records was in disarray, so the band looked for a new deal. Despite the fact that

The Beatles desired to be signed to Apple Records (Mick Fleetwood and George Harrison were brothers-in-law), the band’s manager Clifford Davis chose Warner Bros. Records (via Reprise Re Fleetwood Mac opened for Ten Years After at the Schaefer Music Festival at New The band had more modest success between 1971 and 1974, when the lineup included BoKirwan and Spencer were left with the task of filling Peter’s void in their shows and on their recordings. Kiln House was released in September 1970 by Fleetwood Mac. Kirwan’s songs steered the band toward rock. Meanwhile, Spencer’s contributions centred on recreating the late 1950s’ country-tinged “Sun Sound.” Christine Perfect, who had left the music industry after one unsuccessful solo album, contributed to Kiln House by singing backup vocals and drawing the album cover. Perfect was asked to join Fleetwood Mac as they progressed and developed a new sound. They also released a single at the time, “Dragonfly” b/w “The Purple Dancer,” in the United Kingdom and certain European countries. Despite positive press, the single was not a success, and the B-side has only been reissued once, on a Reprise German-only “Best of” album, making it one of their most obscure songs. [

Christine McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Bob Weston, John McVie, and Bob Welch formed the band in 1973. Christine Perfect, who was married to bassist John McVie, made her first appearance with the band as Christine McVie at Bristol University in May 1969, just as she was leaving Chicken Shack. She achieved success with the Etta James classic “I’d Rather Go Blind,” and was twice named female artist of the year in England. Christine McVie made her debut as an official member on August 6, 1970, in New Orleans. CBS Records, which now owned Blue Horizon (except in the United States and Canada), released The Original Fleetwood Mac, an album of previously unreleased Fleetwood Mac material. The album was moderately successful, and the band’s popularity grew. Jeremy Spencer announced on tour in February 1971 that he was going out to “get a magazine,” but he never returned
