The Fort Wayne TinCaps play in the Midwest League and represent the San Diego Padres’ High-A affiliate. They have their home games at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana. That 2009 title was their only one in the Midwest League. Fort Wayne has been home to the Midwest League since 1993. The Mattoon Indians have been around since the Midwest League’s inception in 1947 when it was known as the Illinois State League and played its home games in Mattoon, Illinois. From Fort Wayne, the club relocated to Wisconsin Rapids (1963–1983) and Kenosha (1984–1992) before finally settling in its current home of Keokuk, Iowa. Before becoming a farm club for the Padres in 1999, the team was a part of the Minnesota Twins organization. Due to the franchise’s relocation to Fort Wayne in 1993, the team’s name was changed to the Wizards.

The team’s name, TinCaps, was decided after the 2008 season in honor of Johnny Appleseed, or John Chapman (1774–1845). However, this portrayal of Johnny Appleseed wearing a tin cooking pot as a hat has been challenged by historians, hence the term “Tin Cap” is used instead. Chapman is resting in peace in a cemetery in Fort Wayne, where he spent his later years.

Memorial Stadium, the team’s home field, was opened to the public in 1993; the same year, the franchise record attendance of 318,506 was achieved. Parkview Field, a component of the Harrison Square redevelopment plan, became the TinCaps’ home field in time for the 2009 season. The Wizards launched a contest to choose a new name to coincide with the opening of their new stadium, and the winning name was “TinCaps.”
