As a young man, Johncock made his racing debut at the Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan. Johncock’s career in USAC and CART/IndyCar started in 1964 with Weinberger Racing. In 1964, he entered just four races before becoming pro in 1965. Milwaukee Mile in August of 1965 was the site of Johncock’s maiden USAC win. After a dismal 1966 season in which he started nine races but finished last, he decided to build his own team, Johncock Racing. Johncock gained Gilmore Broadcasting as his principal sponsor and was the only other “owner-driver” in IndyCar except A. J. Foyt. In the years 1967–1969, Johncock’s team was victorious in six races. However, after losing the Gilmore sponsorship at the end of 1970, the team’s performance declined. Johncock was unsuccessful and eventually filed for bankruptcy between the years of 1970 and 1973. When Johncock signed up with the STP/Patrick Racing team before the 1973 USAC season, he finally broke his winless streak. The 1973 Indianapolis 500 was delayed until late Wednesday afternoon due to a serious accident at the start involving Salt Walther and two days of rain. On lap 58 of the actual race, Swede Savage, a teammate of Johncock’s, was involved in a devastating collision. A pit crew worker for the same STP/Patrick team, Armando Teran, was killed instantly when he was hit by a fire truck traveling north in the pits. When the race got going again on lap 73, Johncock took the lead and didn’t relinquish it until lap 133, when rain started falling again. Towards the end of the sixth hour, the race was red flagged and called off. Johncock went to see Savage in the hospital after a brief, subdued celebration in victory lane. The victory banquet was called off after that. Johncock and his team opted to have burgers from a fast food joint instead. After suffering severe injuries in the race, Savage passed away 33 days later. In 1976, Johncock defeated Johnny Rutherford at Phoenix International Raceway to win the USAC national championship. He placed third in 1976 and 1978 at Indianapolis, and he was leading A. J. Foyt with sixteen laps to go in 1977 until the car’s crankshaft failed.
