Horror and fantasy filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (born October 9, 1964, in Guadalajara, Mexico) is a Mexican director, screenwriter, and producer noted for his ability to infuse his films with nuanced emotion and rich themes.
It was at a young age that Del Toro first became interested in movies and then in scary tales. In high school, he started creating short films, and he continued his education in filmmaking at the Universidad of Guadalajara. Afterwards, he studied under the renowned Dick Smith to master the craft of cinema makeup. Del Toro cofounded the special effects business Necropia and worked as a makeup artist for the industry during the 1980s. Del Toro created the horror anthology series Hora marcada, which ran from 1988 to 1990, and directed numerous episodes of the series before making his feature picture directorial debut with Cronos (1993).
