The Houston Texans play their home games at NRG Stadium and are an NFL franchise headquartered in Houston, TX. The city awarded the Oilers a multimillion-dollar settlement for abandoning the town, but the team was already set on moving. Bob McNair and his business partner, Steve Patterson, spent billions of dollars trying to bring a new NFL franchise to Houston. The new group promptly made Patterson its leader.
As they approached NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, they received an instant lift to their spirits. Tagliabue narrowed the potential new franchise locations down to three: Cleveland, Houston, and Los Angeles. When the Browns departed Cleveland in 1995, Tagliabue assured the city that it would get an NFL club, and in 1998, he made good on that promise by announcing that Cleveland would become the NFL’s 31st team. Despite the fact that it was expected that a team would relocate to Cleveland in order to keep the NFL at 30 teams, Patterson was relieved to learn that the Cleveland Browns would once again have their own team in the 1998 season, and Tagliabue announced his intention to add a 32nd team to either Houston, Los Angeles, or Toronto.
