JJ Adler is an award-winning director and writer who has worked with numerous advertising agencies and clients, such as The Martin Agency, McCann, R/GA, Mother, Droga5, Ogilvy & Mather, Grey, DDB, VMLY&R, PKT, JWT, BBDO, and more, to produce comedic commercials. She was a co-executive producer and director on the pilot episode of The Onion’s 2011 IFC television series, and she was a founding creative and Head Director at The Onion’s Peabody Award–winning web series, The Onion News Network. Her short film “NEW MEDIA,” a dark comedy, premiered at Sundance 2010 and won several prizes. She also won a Student Academy Award for her short documentary “Unattached” in 2008.
In the summer of 2020, Adler founded Ruckus Films, a full-service American commercial production firm that represents a select group of accomplished filmmakers, among them JJ. Outside of the US, she’s on the roster of Circle Productions in Canada, HunkyDory Films in the UK, Soup Film in Germany, and Hobby Film in Scandinavia. Gary Richardson wrote and starred in her 2018 short film, “Places, Thank You Places” (SNL). JJ has directed sketches for several episodes of Adam Ruins Everything and all of Netflix’s critically acclaimed Kenya Barris production Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show.
