Australian rock vocalist Jimmy Barnes  (28 April 1956) was born in Scotland. His work as a solo artist and frontman for the Australian rock band Cold Chisel has made him one of that country’s all-time most prominent stars. The combination of 14 Australian Top 40 albums with Cold Chisel and 13 charting solo albums, including 17 No. 1s, gives Barnes the most hit albums of any artist in the Australian market. Barnes was born James Dixon Swan to Dorothy and Jim Swan in the Cowcaddens neighborhood of Glasgow. His father was a prizefighter. However, even though his maternal grandmother was Jewish, he was raised in a Protestant household.

He had four siblings (John, Dorothy, Linda, and Alan) before age 21 and described his upbringing in the home as a “slum” where drink and violence were commonplace. John, his elder brother, also became a famous singer, although he used the stage name Swanee. Barnes wasn’t interested in singing initially, but John encouraged and trained him to.
