Curler Josh Barry was born on June 20, 1992, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Barry won four consecutive junior New Brunswick titles between 2010 and 2013. He led the New Brunswick team of Chris Sleep, Blake Hunter, and Alex Kyle to a 5-7 record in the 2010 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. Barry was the fourth stone thrower for the Jon Rennie-skippered team at the 2011 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. After going 8-4 in pool play, they were eliminated by Newfoundland and Labrador in a tiebreaker. Barry resumed his skip duties in the 2012 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. Kerry MacLean, Chris MacRae, and Andrew O’Dell were on his squad, and they went 5-7 under his leadership. He skipped the team of Rene Comeau, Spencer Watts, and O’Dell to a 6-4 record in the 2013 Canadian Junior Curling Championships.

When Team Canada (skipper Matt Dunstone) qualified to compete in the 2013 World Junior Curling Championships, they asked Barry to be their alternate. Even though he only participated in one game, Barry and his squad still brought home the bronze medal. Barry moved up to lead on the James Grattan rink after his junior year. The team’s first year on the World Curling Tour ended with a victory at the Curling Masters Champéry. Barry’s first men’s provincial competition, the 2014 Molson Canadian Men’s Provincial Curling Championship, was won by the team later in the season. At the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier, the team competed on behalf of New Brunswick and finished with a record of 6 wins and five losses.
