American football quarterback Kurt Warner, who played for the St. Louis Rams, won the Super Bowl in 2000 and the NFL MVP award in 1999 while playing for the Rams. He also lead the Arizona Cardinals to the franchise’s first Super Bowl appearance (2009).  Warner joined the University of Northern Iowa after failing to get a football scholarship to a Division I-A school, however, he did not become a starting player until his senior year. Later, from 1995 to 1997, he played for the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League after a 1994 trial with the Green Bay Packers of the NFL did not pan out. Warner signed with the St. Louis Rams in December 1997 and spent the following spring playing for the NFL Europe’s Amsterdam Admirals. His 2,101 throwing yards that year for the Admirals put him atop the league. He started all 10 games.

Warner was called up by St. Louis for the 1998 NFL season and spent the year as a backup quarterback, appearing in just the last game of the team’s 4–12 season. Warner took over as the Rams’ starting quarterback when Trent Green suffered a knee injury in the preseason of 1999, and the squad went on an impressive preseason to regular season turnaround. To help the Rams achieve the second-greatest single-season victory increase in NFL history, he topped the league in completion %, touchdown passes, and quarterback rating that year. By January of the following year, Warner and the Rams had made it all the way to the Super Bowl, and he had been crowned the league’s most valuable player for his efforts. There, he set a new Super Bowl record with 414 passing yards and was voted the game’s most valuable player as the Rams beat the Tennessee Titans 23-16 for the team’s first Super Bowl victory.
