Louis Sachar Bio

On March 20, 1954, he was born in East Meadow, New York, and lived there until I was in third grade. Who knows, maybe my father’s job on the 78th level of the Empire State Building inspired Wayside School. We moved to Tustin, California, when I was nine years old. There were orange groves everywhere around at the time, so the neighborhood youngsters would split up into teams and have orange fights. The “ammo” was hanging from the trees, but the nicest ones were on the ground, gushy and decaying. Most of the orange trees have been removed, and fast-food restaurants and large box retailers have taken their place.

I liked school and was a decent student, but it wasn’t until I was in high school that I became a serious reader. The authors who originally inspired me were J.D. Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut. E.L. Doctorow, Margaret Atwood, E.B White, Richard Price, and Kazuo Ishiguro are among my other favorite authors. I went to Antioch College in Ohio after high school. During my first semester, my father passed away, and I returned to California to be closer to my mother. I had a brief but surprisingly successful career as a Fuller Brush man during that time. I went door-to-door selling cleaning supplies, for those of you who don’t know what that means.

I went back to school, this time at the University of California, Berkeley, where I majored in Economics. One day on campus, I was surprised to see an elementary school girl passing out flyers. I grabbed one from her. It read: “Please assist me. At our school, we require teacher aides. All I had to do was assist in a second/third-grade class at Hillside Elementary School, with no homework, term papers, or assessments. I became the Noontime Supervisor, or “Louis the Yard Teacher,” as the kids called me, in addition to helping out in the classroom. It turned out to be my favorite college course and a life-changing experience for me. In 1976, I decided to try my hand at writing a children’s book, which became Sideways Stories From Wayside School. All of the students in Wayside School were modeled after Hillside students. The book took me around nine months to write.

In the evenings, I wrote. I worked at a sweater warehouse in Connecticut throughout the day. After being dismissed after a year (because to my lack of excitement for sweaters), I chose to go to law school. During my first week at Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, a publisher accepted Sideways Stories from Wayside School. graduated from law school in 1980, passed the bar test (which was required to practice law), and then continued to write children’s books while working part-time as a lawyer. It wasn’t until 1989 that my books started selling well enough that I was able to give up my law practice and focus solely on writing. When I first met Carla, she was a counselor at an elementary school. In There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom, she was the idea for the counselor. In 1985, we tied the knot. There, our daughter, was born in 1987. Watson, our dog, and I live in Austin, Texas. There is now employed as a zookeeper. She has cared for tigers, lions, bears, big apes, giraffes, and a range of smaller creatures such as porcupines and sea otters over the last five years.
