Max Scherzer Bio

The St. Louis Cardinals selected pitcher Max Scherzer in the 43rd round of the amateur draught in 2003, but he chose to attend college instead. The Arizona Diamondbacks picked him in the first round of the amateur draught in 2006. Scout Joe Robinson signed him and he made his professional debut in 2007 with the Visalia Oaks, going 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA before being promoted to the Mobile BayBears. In 14 starts with Mobile, he went 4-4 with a 3.91 ERA and 76 strikeouts. In four starts with the Tucson Sidewinders in 2008, he had a 1.17 ERA and struck out 38 batters in 23 innings. He was then called up by the Diamondbacks in late April and made his debut against the Houston Astros on April 29th, pitching 4 1/3 innings of perfect baseball while striking out seven batters. Scherzer’s debut was the longest in “modern major-league history” by a pitcher who retired every batter he faced, according to the Elias Sports Bureau (13 batters). Jimmy Key had the most batters in the previous 50 years, with ten. As a prospect, he went 0-4 with a 3.05 ERA in 16 games for the Diamondbacks. In 2009, he pitched in the starting rotation for the entire season, going 9-11 with a 4.12 ERA in 30 starts and striking out 174 batters in 170 1/3 innings.

Max was traded to the Detroit Tigers before the 2010 season in a three-team deal that included the New York Yankees and current and potential stars including Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, and Austin Jackson. The season, he made 31 starts for the Tigers, going 12-11 with a 3.50 ERA and 184 strikeouts. In 2011, despite an improvement in his ERA to 4.43 in 33 starts, he had a better record with a bad ERA, ending 15-9. He finished second on the team in wins, behind only ace Justin Verlander, despite being a late-season addition. After the Tigers won their first AL Central championship, Doug Fister, who had pitched beautifully since joining the team, was named the number two starter when the postseason began. He shut out the Yankees on two hits over six innings in Game 2 of the ALDS, his start having been pushed forward after Game 1 was postponed due to rain after just one inning, causing both teams to use their number two starters when the game was resumed the next day. He pitched in relief in Game 5, taking over for Fister with a 3-1 lead in the 6th inning and pitching a scoreless inning before giving up a run on two hits in the 7th and handing the ball over to Joaquin Benoit. In the ALCS, he started two games against the Texas Rangers, but the Tigers lost both times, with Scherzer taking the loss in Game 6 after giving up six runs in two and a third innings.

In a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 20, 2012, Max set a personal record by striking out 15 batters in seven innings. He was one short of Mickey Lolich’s Tigers team record, which he set in 1969. On August 21st, he took over the major league lead in strikeouts, striking out 8 in a win over the Toronto Blue Jays to bring his total to 186, six more than his teammate Justin Verlander for the American League lead and five more than R.A. Dickey of the New York Mets for the major league lead. At that point in the season, he also had the highest K/9 average by a starter in ten years. However, on September 18th, he was forced to quit a start against the Oakland Athletics after just two innings due to shoulder exhaustion. He bounced back in time for the playoffs, going 16-7 with a 3.74 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 187 2/3 innings. He was second in the AL in strikeouts to Verlander, but had a better K/9 ratio than his teammate. He got a no-decision in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Oakland Athletics after giving up an unearned run in 5 1/3 innings while striking out eight and walking one. On October 18th, he started and won Game 4 of the ALCS, allowing just one run in 5 2/3 innings while striking out ten batters and allowing just two hits and two walks to the New York Yankees. With the victory, the Tigers completed a four-game sweep of the Yankees and advanced to the 2012 World Series. On October 28th, he started Game 4 of the World Series against the San Francisco Giants and gave up three runs in six and a third innings before leaving with the score tied 3-3. The Tigers went on to lose 4-3 in the 10th inning, completing the Giants’ four-game sweep.
