Memphis Grizzlies  Bio

National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise the Memphis Grizzlies, based in Memphis, Tennessee, that competes in the Western Conference (NBA).

The Grizzlies made their NBA debut in 1995 and were one of two Canadian franchises to join the league that year (the other being the Toronto Raptors). Their first four seasons were a complete waste of time; they won just 19 games and finished at the bottom of their division in five of those six years spent in Vancouver. When the Grizzlies’ attendance and profitability began to decline, the team’s owners relocated the franchise to Memphis in 2001 in a bid to boost income and attendance.

It was in the Grizzlies’ first draught that they drafted Pau Gasol, a Spaniard who would become the team’s first All-Star. Renowned in 2002, the franchise brought in basketball legend Jerry West as general manager. While Memphis had struggled before to the 2003–04 season (a 22-win improvement from 2002–03), it made its first playoff appearance in franchise history thanks to West’s rapid turnaround in fortunes.

The Grizzlies were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs that year, as they were in 2004-05 and 2005-06. However, Memphis’s winning streak was short-lived and the team finished last in 2006–07. As the Grizzlies began their rebuilding process, both West and Gasol left the franchise in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

Zach Randolph and Rudy Gay led the Memphis Grizzlies back into the playoffs in 2010–11, and the team went on to beat the San Antonio Spurs in six games to win its first playoff series. For the first time in Grizzlies history, Randolph, Marc Gasol (Pau’s brother), and a youthful, defensive-minded team made it to the conference finals in 2012–13.

Memphis qualified for the playoffs in the following years, but the aging squad provided diminishing returns, with the team being swept by the Spurs in the 2015–16 play-offs after a 42–40 regular-season record with 28 players on the court due to widespread injuries. The team’s 22–60 record in the 2017–18 season was the worst in the division due to a slew of injuries to key players.

Memphis is a city in Shelby County, Tennessee, and the county seat since 1819. Located on the Chickasaw bluffs above the Mississippi River between Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee is this quaint little town. Memphis, Tennessee, is the state’s second-largest metropolitan region and the state’s most populated metropolis.

There is a slew of suburbs that surround Memphis, including West Memphis, Arkansas; Arlington, Tennessee; Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington; Horn Lake, Olive Branch, and Southaven, Mississippi; and, of course, Memphis proper. An area of 295 sqm (764 square km). 690,743 people live in the city, while Memphis’ metropolitan area has a population of 1,205,204 people.

1541 was the year in which the area was explored by Hernando de Soto of Spain. In 1797, the United States built Fort Adams on the location after French (1739) and Spanish (1795) forts briefly occupied the area. The Chickasaw Indians occupied the site where Memphis was built in 1819. One of its founders was Andrew Jackson, a future president of the United States. Egypt’s ancient city of Memphis (meaning “Place of Good Abode”) provided the inspiration for Memphis’ name.

With the rise of cotton farming in the South and the availability of train and river transit, Memphis flourished swiftly. In 1826, the company was incorporated. On June 6, 1862, a Union naval force took the Confederate military stronghold and held it until the end of the American Civil War. May 18, 1866, was the day of one of the United States’ greatest race riots.

After the Civil War, Memphis became a hub for the cotton trade in the South. The city was destroyed by yellow fever in the 1870s, killing more than 5,000 people. With dwindling tax revenues and a dwindling population, the city ran out of money and had to give up its charter in 1879. In 1893, the city was awarded a new charter after a series of drastic sanitary changes, ongoing cotton trafficking, and the development of a market for hardwood.

After the Second World War, economic growth was accelerated. The civil rights movement had a significant impact on the city in the 1960s. During a visit to the city in support of the sanitation workers’ strike on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and murdered by a sniper on the Lorraine Motel’s balcony. In 1991, the motel was renamed the National Civil Rights Museum and King’s room was preserved as a museum display.
