The Miami Hurricanes football team competes in American football for the University of Miami. The Hurricanes compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision BS and the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division (The University of Miami football program began with only freshmen.

The “drive series” offense, an option-oriented attack from the Split-T formation that relied on zone blocking and featured either a fullback fake or carry on every play, was one of Andy Gustafson’s major innovations at Miami.  Under Gustafson’s direction, Miami produced its first All-American, Al Carapella, in 1950 and went 9–1–1 in 1951, including a 35–13 victory over rival Florida State in its first-ever game and a 15–14 loss to Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

The following season, Miami won eight games and advanced to a bowl game for the first time in school history, defeating Clemson 14–0 in a rematch at the Gator Bowl. The NCAA imposed two one-year penalties on Miami in the middle of the 1954 season for providing transportation and tryouts to prospective players.  As a result, Gustafson’s 1954 team was ineligible to play in a bowl game, and the 8–1 Hurricanes, whose lone loss came 14–13 at No. 14 Auburn, finished ninth in the Coaches’ Poll, the school’s first top ten poll finish. Two years later, in 1956, an 8–1–1.

Miami team led by team captain and All-American Don Bosseler was considered for the Sugar Bowl, but the program’s bowl ban was not set to expire until ten days after the game, making it ineligible to play. Both the AP and Coaches’ Polls had the team ranked sixth at the end of the season.

During Gustafson’s final years as head coach, two-time All-America quarterback George Mira led the Hurricanes to appearances in the 1961 Liberty Bowl and the 1962 Gotham Bowl, both of which they lost.  The team struggled to a 3–7 record in 1963. Despite this, Mira, who set many of the school’s passing records during his four years at Miami, was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated and finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting as a senior.

After the season, Gustafson decided to form a team in 1926. Its first game, on October 23, 1926, was a 7–0 victory over Rollins College in front of 304 fans. Under the direction of head coach Howard “Cub” Buck, the freshman team went undefeated in their first season, going 8–0.  Two of the victories came against the University of Havana, one in Miami on Thanksgiving Day and one in Havana on Christmas Day. Miami’s final home game of the season featured a first: the first Hurricane football game played on New Year’s Day at University Stadium against Howard.

Around this time, the team adopted the official nickname “Hurricanes,” though the exact timing and origin of the name is unknown; some reports claim it was in reference to the destructive power of the 1926 hurricane, which delayed the program’s first game by a month,

Miami began varsity competition in 1927, defeating Rollins 39–3 in its first game and going on to a 3–6–1 record.  The team improved to 4–4–1 in 1928, but it was not enough to keep Buck’s job, and he was replaced prior to the 1929 season by J. Burton Rix, formerly of Southern Methodist.  The arrival of Rix was paid for by a group of local businessmen.

During the off-season, the program, which had competed as an independent for the previous two years, joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA). Miami played its first varsity road game (a 14–0 loss at Southwest Louisiana) in 1929, and Rix led the team to its first winning season, finishing 3–2.

His tenure, however, was brief; after the 1929 stock market crash, off-campus funding for the program dried up, and he resigned after one season.  Ernest Brett took Rix’s place, and Miami played Temple in its first game outside the South in 1930, falling 34–0 to the Owls in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

On October 31, 1930, the Hurricanes faced Bowden College in one of the nation’s first eight games in Miami.  Brett only lasted a year, and in 1931, Tom McCann became the program’s fourth head coach.  During McCann’s tenure, the football program had its most successful seasons to that point. After a difficult first year, Miami posted a winning record in 1932 and hosted the inaugural Palm Festival (later renamed the Orange Bowl), defeating Manhattan College 7–0 at Moore Park in Miami.

In 1933, the program went 5–12 and earned another Palm Festival berth, and in 1934, it played in its first official bowl game, losing 26–0 to Bucknell in the first Orange Bowl. In 1935, a group of Miami football fans attempted to hire Red Grange as a coach. However, the move was vetoed by President Bowman Foster Ashe.

In part because of the $7,500 salary that le draught and the most consecutive draughts with a first-round pick. The Heisman Trophy has been won by two Hurricanes, and nine have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The team’s home games are held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
