Mike Cahill entered the world on July 5, 1979, in New Haven, Connecticut. When he was a kid, he experimented with producing movies using Fisher-Price and VHS camcorders. At the age of seventeen, he and a buddy made a documentary called The Pocket, which was about the go-go scene in Washington, DC. Cahill attended Georgetown University to major in economics after finishing high school and earned his degree in 2001. He became acquainted with Brit Marling, an actress he met at a Georgetown University film festival, and the two started collaborating on short films while Cahill was still a student there. Cahill started working at National Geographic Television and Film while still a senior at Georgetown.
He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the network’s youngest field producer, editor, and cinematographer. In the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Cahill’s second feature film, I Origins, earned the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, making him the first person to win the prize twice. Fox Searchlight will distribute the picture. Cahill was said to be working on a reincarnation film and another film about “a fashion designer who dwells at the bottom of the sea” in 2011, prior to the premiere of I Origins, according to a press statement from Fox Searchlight. Also, he has begun writing I Origins 2 in 2015, so expect it some time in the near future. Nothing about this was planned.
