Mike Lee, full name Michael Shumway Lee (born June 4, 1971 in Mesa, Arizona, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican in 2010 and began serving as Utah’s senator the following year.

Lee was born into a Mormon family and relocated to Utah when he was an infant, where his father, Rex Lee, became the first dean of Brigham Young University’s newly created law school; the older Lee also served as solicitor general in President Ronald Reagan’s administration (1981–85). Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in political science (B.A., 1994) from Brigham Young University, where he served as student body president.

He married Sharon Burr around this time and the couple went on to have three children. He served as a clerk for Samuel Alito at the Third Circuit Court of the United States Court of Appeals in 1998 after graduating from BYU’s law school in 1997. Lee then worked for a company in Washington, D.C., before returning to Utah as an assistant United States attorney (2002–05). In 2005, he was appointed counsel to Governor Jon Huntsman, but resigned after a year to clerk for Alito, who had been appointed to the United States Supreme Court. In 2007, Lee re-entered private practise.

Lee campaigned for the United States Senate in 2010, identifying himself with the Tea Party movement. He narrowly defeated his Democratic opponent in the primary, but handily trounced him in the general election. He did, however, occasionally oppose Trump, most notably on the issue of presidential war powers. This was particularly clear in January 2020, when he condemned Trump’s decision to approve a drone strike against an Iranian general, amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran.

Later same month, the Senate began its trial of Trump, who had been impeached by the United States House of Representatives for allegedly withholding money to Ukraine in order to coerce the country into initiating an inquiry into Joe Biden’s wrongdoing (in 2020 Biden became the Democratic presidential nominee).
