The youngest brother was born after Mireille Mathieu relocated to Paris. Mireille Mathieu was the eldest daughter of a family of fourteen children when she was born on July 22, 1946, in Avignon, France. Her mother Marcelle-Sophie was from Dunkirk, while her father Roger and his family were natives of Avignon. After her mother vanished and her grandmother passed away, she fled World War II and arrived in Avignon in 1944. Just outside the main gate to the Saint-Vémanaged cemetery, Roger and his father Arcade ran the family stonemasonry business. Four generations of the Mathieu family have worked as stonemasons. When Mathieu sung on Christmas Eve 1950 during Midnight Mass, she received a lollipop as payment for her first paid appearance in front of an audience. Observing Édith Piaf perform on television was a pivotal experience.
