The team was founded in 1972 as part of the NHL’s efforts to keep a rival league’s World Hockey Association (WHA) team out of the newly constructed Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in suburban Uniondale, New York.

After two years of assembling the team’s roster, they achieved near-instant success by securing fourteen consecutive playoff berths beginning with their third season. Between 1980 and 1983, the Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cups, becoming the seventh of the NHL’s eight recognised dynasties. Between 1980 and 1984, they won 19 consecutive playoff series, a feat that is still unrivalled in professional sports history. Following the team’s dynasty era, the franchise faced financial, ownership, and management issues, as well as an ageing arena and low attendance.

Their struggles were mirrored on the ice, as the team had not won a division title since 1987–88 anWith the World Hockey Association (WHA) set to launch in the fall of 1972, the fledgling league intended to house its New York team, the Raiders, in Nassau County’s brand-new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.  County officials did not consider the WHA to be a major league and wanted to keep the Raiders out. William Shea, who had helped bring the Major League Baseball’s New York Mets to the area a decade before, was enlisted to help bring an NHL team to Long Island. Shea found a sympathetic ear in NHL president Clarence Campbell, but was met with opposition from the New York Rangers, who did not want additional competition in the New York area.

would be under no obligation to pay the Rangers anything. Perhaps recalling the crucial role the New York Jets had played in ensuring the success of the American Football League just a few years before, Jennings ended up helping to bring a new NHL team to town.  Despite having expanded to 14 teams only two years prior, the NHL awarded a Long Island-based franchise to clothing manufacturer Roy Boe, owner of the American Basketball Association’s New York Nets, on November 8, 1971. The franchise fee was $6 million ($37.12 million in 2020 dollars plus a $5 million ($30.93 million in 2020 dollars territorial fee to the Rangers.  In order to keep the schedule balanced, Atlanta was given an expansion franchise (the Flames).

Many expected the franchise to be called the “Long Island Ducks,” after a team that played in the Eastern Hockey League from 1959 to 1973. The team was quickly dubbed the “Isles” by the local press In the 1972 Expansion Draft, the Islanders selected veteran forward Ed Westfall, Gerry Hart, and goalkeeper Billy Smith, as well as junior league stars Billy Harris, Lorne Henning, and Bobby Nystrom.  Phil Goyette was named the team’s first head coach shortly after the draught, but he was fired halfway through the season and replaced by Earl Ingarfield and assistant coach Aut Erickson. They began to face stiff competition from division rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers, who eliminated the Islanders in the Patrick Division Finals in 1985 and 1987, and the Washington Capitals, who swept the Islanders’ first round series in 1986, the team’s first exit without winning a playoff round since 1978.

He stated, “I told the owners that we weren’t going to beat the team next door by stealing players from other teams. We’d have to create our own stars.” Westfall was named the team’s first captain prior to the start of the season.  Their first win came on October 12, 1972, when they defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3–2.During the team’s first season, young players like Smith, Nystrom, and Henning (all of whom would go on to be part of the Islanders dynasty that won four straight Stanley Cups in the 1980s) were given opportunities to prove themselves in the NHL. However, the young and inexperienced expansion team posted a record of 12–60–6, setting an NHL record for the most losses and the worst overall record in a season.

On January 18, they defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins 9–7. After finishing last in the standings that year, they were given the first pick in the 1973 draught.  Off the ice, the Islanders struggled financially, which was exacerbated by the then scored his first NHL goal. Despite failing to make the playoffs, their 56 points represented a 26-point improvement over the previous season.d had gone 22 seasons without winning a playoff series prior to the 2016 playoffs. Following the 2014–15 season, the Islanders relocated to the Barclays Center after years of unsuccessful attempts to rebuild or replace Nassau Coliseum in suburban Long Island. The Islanders have inducted eight former players into the Hockey Hall of Fame, seven of whom – Al Arbour, Mike Bossy, Clark Gillies, Denis Potvin, Billy Smith, Bill Torrey, and Bryan Trottier – were on all four Cup-winning teams. Pat LaFontaine was the most recent inductee, inducted in 2003.

In 1981–82, the Islanders won a franchise-record 15 straight games en route to a franchise-record 118 points, while Mike Bossy set a scoring record for right wingers with 147 points in an 80-game schedule. The Islanders won the regular season, but in the playoffs against the Pittsburgh Penguins, they were down late in the third period of game 5 before John Tonelli scored both the tying goal and the overtime winner. After defeating the Rangers in six games, they swept both the upstart Quebec Nordiques and the Cinderella storey Vancouver Canucks in the first ever coast-to-coast Stanley Cup Final for their third straight championship. During that series, Bossy was upended by a check from

iger Williams and fell parallel to the ice, but he managed to hook the puck with his stick and score. Bossy scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy. Although the Islanders had won three straight Stanley Cups the following year, more attention was paid to the upstart Edmonton Oilers, whose young superstar Wayne Gretzky had just shattered existing scoring records. The 1982–83 season was thus a battle to determine which team was the best in the NHL. The Oilers had a better regular season, but the Islanders swept them in the Stanley Cup finals to win their fourth straight title. Billy Smith was named the Most Valuable Player of the Playoffs after shutting down the Oilers’ feared scoring machine. During the series, Gretzky failed to score a goal. [

The Sutter brothers, Duane and Brent, scored 7 and 5 points in the first three games, respectively, while Bossy scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in game four. After the game, the Oilers players passed by the Islanders’ locker room and were surprised to see the champions exhausted. Oilers players such as Gretzky and Mark Messier .

In the first round of the 1987 playoffs, the Islanders trailed the Capitals by three games to one but were not eliminated due to a change in playoff format from a best-of-5 series to a best-of-7 series. The Islanders tied the series, setting the stage for one of the most famous games in NHL history: the “Easter Epic.” Kelly Hrudey stopped 73 shots on goal, and Pat LaFontaine scored at 8:47 of the fourth overtime—and at 1:56 a.m. on Easter Sunday. Despite being outshot 75–52, the Islanders won.

The Flyers defeated them in seven games in the Patrick Division finals.  Mike Bossy was forced to retire after the season due to chronic back pain. The Islanders won another division title the following season, but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the upstart New Jersey Devils. Potvin retired after the playoffs with the most career goals (310), assists an Even as some of the stars from the Cup teams left, the Islanders remained competitive for the rest of the decade. Pickett began to keep the money from the team’s cable deal rather than reinvesting it in the team as he had done in previous years as the decade progressed. Although it was not immediately obvious, Torrey’s ability to replace all of the departing talent was hampered by a lack of funds
