Phillip John Donahue (born December 21, 1935) is an American television personality, screenwriter, and host of The Phil Donahue Show. The television show, subsequently known simply as Donahue, was the first talk show format to be shown on television. Donahue was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to a middle-class, church-going Irish Catholic family; his father, Phillip Donahue, worked as a furniture sales clerk, and his mother, Catherine (McClory), worked as a department store shoe clerk.  He graduated from Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood’s Our Lady of Angels elementary school in 1949.dward High School in suburban Lakewood, Ohio, an all-boys Catholic private high school administered by the Congregation of Holy Cross.
