Racing legend Charles “Red” Farmer was born on October 15, 1932. In other words, he’s a gangster from Alabama. At the Opa-locka Speedway outside of Miami, Florida, with a 1934 Ford, he competed in his maiden race. The community of Hueytown, Alabama, was always home to him, even if he gained fame as a member of the notorious Alabama Gang. Victories during Farmer’s career are estimated to be anywhere from 700 and 900, with the vast majority coming in the 1950s and 1960s. He entered and finished 36 races in the NASCAR Cup Series between 1953 and 1975. Throughout his career, he amassed a number of track championships at the regional level. Before moving on to the Grand National series, he competed in modified stock car races in the northeast.


He was an early pioneer in the movement from the modified circuit to the Grand National Series. From 1969 to 1971, he won the NASCAR National Late Model Sportsman championship. While racing in NASCAR’s premier division, Farmer’s best finish was fourth place in the 1972 Talladega 500 and the 1968 Middle Georgia 500 at Macon, Georgia. Since he was satisfied with his performance in the Late Model Sportsman Series, he entered very few Cup events. He won the award for most popular driver in NASCAR four times. In the races, Farmer drove the white and gold 97. The white, gold, and red Ford Fairlane with the number F-97 was Farmer’s race car in the mid-1960s.
