Son of U.S. Army General Henry Lee Badham Jr. and English-born actress Mary Iola Badham (née Hewitt), Badham was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. When John was only two years old, his father, Henry, who was born in Birmingham, Alabama, brought his family back to the United States. Both of John’s parents and both sets of paternal grandparents are laid to rest at Birmingham’s Elmwood Cemetery. Henry served as a pilot in both wars, and the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame honoured his achievements after his death in 2007. Henry retired as a brigadier general from the United States Air Force and went into business, assisting in the growth of the Ensley and Bessemer areas close to Birmingham.
