Upchurch had great success as a receiver and kick returner in his nine seasons in the NFL. He gained 1,014 yards on kickoff returns and added 312 yards on punt returns and 97 yards on carries in his debut season. His 653 punt return yards in 1977 were the most in the NFL, and they helped his club reach the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.
