Band Bio

The Rolling Stones are a British rock band that was founded in London in 1962. They have been active for nearly six decades and are one of the most popular and enduring bands of the rock era. The Rolling Stones pioneered the gritty, heavier-driven sound that came to define hard rock, departing from the pop rock of the early 1960s.Jones left the band shortly before his death in 1969, having been replaced by guitarist Mick Taylor. That year, they were introduced on stage for the first time as ‘The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.’ Sticky Fingers (1971), which produced “Brown Sugar” and featured the first appearance of their tongue and lips logo, was their first of eight consecutive No. 1 studio albums in the United States. Exile on Main Street (1972), which included the hit song “Tumbling Dice,” and Goats Head Soup (1973), which included the hit ballad “Angie,” were also big sellers. In 1974, Taylor was replaced by Ronnie Wood.

The band continued to release successful albums, including their two best-selling albums, Some Girls (1978), which featured “Miss You,” and Tattoo You (1981), which featured “Start Me Up.” Steel Wheels (1989) was widely regarded as a comeback album, and it was followed by Voodoo Lounge (1994), which debuted at number one worldwide. Both albums were promoted by massive stadium and arena tours, as the Stones remained a huge concert draw; by 2007, they had four of the top five highest-grossing concert tours of all time. From Wyman’s departure in 1993 to Watts’ death in 2021, the band remained a four-piece core, with Darryl Jones playing bass on tour and on the majority of studio recordings. Blue & Lonesome (2016) became their twelfth number-one album in the United Kingdom.

The Rolling Stones are one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with an estimated 200 million record sales. The group has received three Grammy Awards as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1989, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2004, they were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. Based on US chart success, Billboard magazine ranked the Rolling Stones second on their list of the “Greatest Artists of All Time” in 2019. On Rolling Stone’s list of the Greatest Artists of All Time, they are ranked fourth. from the beginning On 17 October 1961, Jagger and Richards met on platform 2 at Dartford railway station in Dartford, Kent. A blue plaque commemorates their meeting. Keith Richards and Mick Jagger met as classmates and childhood friends in Dartford, Kent, in 1950.n the mid-1950s, Jagger formed a garage band with his friend Dick Taylor, playing mostly Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Howlin’ Wolf, and Bo Diddley material.

On the 17th of October 1961, Jagger ran into Richards again on platform two of Dartford railway station.  The records Jagger was carrying by Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters revealed a common interest. Soon after, a musical collaboration began.  Richards and Taylor frequently visited Jagger at his home. In late 1961, the meetings were moved to Taylor’s house, where Alan Etherington and Bob Beckwith joined the trio, forming the Blues Boys. [The Blues Boys learned about the Ealing Jazz Club from Jazz News, which also mentioned Alexis Korner’s rhythm and blues band, Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, in March 1962. Korner was impressed by the group’s best recordings, which they sent to him on tape.

They paid a visit to the Ealing Jazz Club on April 7th, where they met the band, which included vocalist Mick Jagger, multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, guitarist Keith Richards, bassist Bill Wyman, and drummer Charlie Watts. During their early years, Jones was the primary leader: he assembled the band, gave it a name, and drove their sound and image. When Andrew Loog Oldham took over as manager of the group in 1963, he encouraged them to write their own songs. Jagger and Richards took over as the band’s primary creative forces, alienating Jones, who developed a drug addiction that hampered his ability to contribute meaningfully.

The Rolling Stones began playing covers and were at the forefront of the British Invasion in 1964, as well as being associated with the youthful and rebellious counterculture of the 1960s. They went on to have more success with their own material, as “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (1965), “Get Off of My Cloud” (1965), and “Paint It Black” (1966) all became international No. 1 hits. Aftermath (1966), their first entirely original album, is regarded as the most important of their early works. [2] In 1967, they had the double-sided hit “Ruby Tuesday”/”Let’s Spend the Night Together,” and on Their Satanic Majesties Request, they experimented with psychedelic rock.he Devil,” and Let It Bleed (1969), which featured “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Gimme Shelter.” Let It Bleed was the first of five No. 1 albums in the United States.

Korner was pleased with the recordings.  On April 7, they went to the Ealing Jazz Club and met the members of Blues Incorporated, which included slide guitarist Brian Jones, keyboardist Ian Stewart, and drummer Charlie Watts. Following a meeting with Korner, Jagger and Richards began jamming with the group.  Jones, who was no longer in a band, advertised for bandmates in Jazz Weekly, while Stewart found them a practise space they decided to form a band playing Chicago blueThey objected to Jagger and Richards’ preference for Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley songs.

The addition of drummer Tony Chapman in June 1962 completed the lineup of Jagger, Richards, Jones, Stewart, and Taylor. Jones, according to Richards, named the band during a phone call to Jazz News. On 7 December 1962, Bill Wyman auditioned for the role of bass guitarist at a pub in Chelsea and was hired as a replacement for Dick Taylor. The band was impressed by his instrument and amplifiers (including the Vox AC30).  The Rolling Stones’ classic lineup, featuring Charlie Watts on drums, performed in public for the first time on Saturday, January 12, 1963, at the Ealing Club.

Watts, however, did not become the Stones’ permanent drummer until a performance there on February 2, 1963. The back room of the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, London, where the Rolling Stones began their first residency in February 1963. but remained the band’s road manager and touring keyboardist. Oldham later said of Stewart’s decision, “Well, he just doesn’t look the part, and six is too many for to remember the faces in the picture.” Later, Oldham changed the ages of the band members in promotional materials to make them appear to be teenagers. All of the tracks on the first Rolling Stones album, The Rolling Stones, were recorded there. Oldham compared the Rolling Stones’ independence to the Beatles’ obligation to record in EMI’s studios, saying it made them appear as “mere mortals… sweating in the studio for the man.He positioned the Rolling Stones as the nefarious counterpoint to the Beatles by having the band pose unsmiling on the cover of their debut album.

During the tour, they recorded for two days at Chicago’s Chess Studios, where they met many of their major influences, including Muddy Waters. These sessions produced the Rolling Stones’ first UK No. 1 hit, a cover version of Bobby and Shirley Womack’s “It’s All Over Now.” The Stones followed the Famous Flames, who featured James Brown, in the 1964 film T.A.M.I. Show, which paired American acts with British Invasion artists. “We weren’t actually following James Brown because there was significant time between the filming of each section,” Jagger explained. Nonetheless, he was still irritated…” On October 25, the band appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. Sullivan barred the Stones from appearing on his show due to the uproar surrounding them.He did, however, schedule them for an appearance the following year. During the tour, their second LP, 12 X 5, which was only available in the United States, was released. During the Stones’ early releases, Richards was typically credited as “Richard.

The Rolling Stones’ fifth UK single, a cover of Willie Dixon’s “Little Red RoosterTheir first international No. 1 hit was “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” which was recorded in May 1965 during the band’s third North American tour. Richards used a fuzzbox to record the song’s driving guitar riff as a scratch track to guide a horn section. Nonetheless, the final cut lacked the planned horn overdubs. It was their fourth UK No. 1 and their first in the US, where it spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The band’s commercial success was global. The US version of the LP Out of Our Heads, released in July 1965, also reached No. 1; it featured seven original songs, three Jagger/Richards numbers, and four credited to Nanker Phelge.  Their second international No Korner was impressed by the group’s submission of a tape of their best recordings. On April 7, they went to the Ealing Jazz Club and met the members of Blues Incorporated, which included slide guitarist Brian Jones, keyboardist Ian Stewart, and drummer Charlie Watts. [12] Following a meeting with Korner, Jagger and Richards began jamming with the group.
