Jan de Bont is a former Dutch cinematographer, director, and film producer who was born on October 22, 1943. Speed (1994) and Twister (1996) are two of his most well-known works as a director (1996). De Bont has also served as the director of photography on a wide variety of commercial and genre hits including Roar, Cujo, Flesh and Blood, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, and Basic Instinct. The youngest of seventeen children, De Bont joined his Catholic family in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

His first films were created when he was a student at the Amsterdam Film School under the tutelage of Dutch avant-garde filmmaker Adriaan Ditvoorst. He originally gained recognition in his home country of the Netherlands for his work as cinematographer on Paul Verhoeven’s controversial 1971 picture Blue Movie, and then again for his work on Paul Verhoeven’s Turkish Delight (1973), which starred Rutger Hauer and Monique van de Ven.

He has been a Hollywood regular since the 1980s, working with the likes of Verhoeven and John McTiernan among others. While working as the film’s cinematographer in 1981, de Bont had to need 220 stitches because a lion had lifted his scalp. Immediately after the production of Roar, de Bont directed the 1983 horror picture Cujo, an adaptation of the same-named Stephen King book. He worked as the film’s DP on 1988’s Die Hard, an action thriller that received rave reviews. Black Rain, an action film directed by Ridley Scott, was filmed by de Bont the next year. It was with the 1994 action thriller Speed that De Bont made his directorial debut. In 1996, he achieved even more success with the film Twister.
