Filmmaker, writer, and cinematographer Thomas A. DiCillo was born in the United States on August 14, 1953. A native of North Carolina, his birthplace was Camp Le Jeune. His mother was from New England, and both of his parents were Italian. He attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, for his undergraduate degree in creative writing, and then New York University’s Film School for his graduate degree in filmmaking, where he met future peers including Jim Jarmusch, Howard Brookner, Sara Driver, and Spike Lee. He subsequently went on to pursue careers in acting and cinematography before directing his own films. In his first feature, Johnny Suede (1991), DiCillo gave breakout parts to then-unknowns Brad Pitt and Catherine Keener. It was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Known for his satirical take on the indie film industry, DiCillo won praise for his second feature, Living in Oblivion. This low-budget indie film from 1995 portrays Steve Buscemi as a filmmaker who is almost driven to insanity by his cast and crew, which includes a conceited Hollywood actor. In an interview with Salon, DiCillo described the moviemaking process as “one of the most laborious, dull, excruciating experiences, and that’s just when anything goes well,” which served as the impetus for him to write Living in Oblivion. Double Whammy, his film from 2001, was a VHS exclusive. The comedy Delirious (2006) starring Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Alison Lohman, and Elvis Costello, was shown at the San Sebastian Film Festival, where it went on to win three prizes (Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and the Signis Award for originality).
