Thomas E. Sneva, a race car driver born on June 1, 1948, in Spokane, Washington, formerly served as a principal. In 1983, Sneva triumphed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sneva, often known as “The Gasman” because of his many gas station victories, earned the Indianapolis 500 pole position three times. It was on May 14, 1977, when Sneva set a new record in the Indianapolis 500 qualifying speed of almost 200 miles per hour. The 200.535 mph he achieved in one lap was a new record. In 1984, on May 12th, Sneva set a new record in the Indianapolis 500 by qualifying at above 210 mph. His best lap times were 210.689 mph for a single lap and 210.029 mph for four laps.

Sneva collided with Eldon Rasmussen’s automobile, causing Sneva to flip into the catch fence and completely destroy Rasmussen’s vehicle. If Sneva survived, she would only suffer minor injuries.
