Tony Shalhoub Bio

Shalhoub, the ninth of ten children, was born and reared in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in a Lebanese Maronite Christian family with a strong religious tradition. His father, Joe, was born in Mount Lebanon and moved to the United States after his own parents, Wilhelm and Mariam, were both murdered in World War I. Joe’s mother, Mariam, was born in Lebanon and immigrated to the United States. He worked as a meat peddler and drove a refrigerated truck for the company.

Joe married Shalhoub’s mother, Helen (née Seroogy), who was born in Lebanon and raised in the United States. While Joe was taken in by her family to be reared when they were both children, the two became acquainted.  Abdul Naimy, one of Shalhoub’s maternal great-great-grandfathers, though he was a Christian Maronite Lebanese, was killed in the Hamidian atrocities performed against Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1895, which were committed by the Turkish government.

He was introduced to acting by his older sister, who nominated him to be an extra in a high school performance of The King and I. Shalhoub went on to star in the show. When he graduated from Green Bay East High School, he spent a brief period of time at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay before engaging in the National Student Exchange Program at the University of Southern Maine, where he later transferred and received his undergraduate degree. His education continued with a master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama, which he received in 1980.

Following his breakthrough performance in Wings, Shalhoub went on to play an excitable producer who consults with John Turturro’s character in Barton Fink and a fast-talking lawyer in The Man Who Wasn’t There (both directed by the Coen brothers), a linguistically unidentified cabby in Quick Change, a sleazy alien pawnshop owner Jack Jeebs in the Men in Black films, a sympathetic attorney working for John Tra The film Big Night, in which he co-starred as an Italian-speaking chef complete with an Italian accent, was one of his most notable roles to date.
