The Toronto Raptors are a Canadian NBA team headquartered in Toronto that competes in the NBA’s Eastern Conference (NBA). The Raptors have won two total titles: one from their conference and one from the NBA (both in 2019). In 1995, the NBA welcomed the Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies as expansion teams in the Western Conference. The two new clubs represented the first-ever Canadian-based NBA franchises. In their first three years in the NBA, the Raptors never made it out of the cellar of their division. In a draught day deal in 1998, Toronto acquired guard-forward Vince Carter, their first superstar. Carter, a five-time All-Star with the Raptors, was instrumental in the team making the playoffs for the first time in club history in the 1999–2000 season.
In 2000–01, the Raptors reached the playoffs once again and went as far as the conference semifinals before being eliminated by the eventual conference champion Philadelphia 76ers in a thrilling seven-game series. Toronto had a winning season in 2001–02, but was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. This was followed by four consecutive losing seasons, and the transfer of an unhappy Carter in 2004. With Chris Bosh at centre, the Raptors made it back to the playoffs in 2006–07, but they were eliminated in the first round both that year and the next, and the club has not had a winning record since. The rebuilding process took much longer when Bosh departed the organisation in free agency in 2010.
