Yaya DaCosta Bio

In 1982, DaCosta was born in New York City, where he grew up with ancestors who were both Brazilian and Black-American. She is a native of New York City, having grown up in the Harlem neighborhood. In addition to her native language, she is fluent in English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, and conversational Japanese, among other languages. Following high school, she attended the prestigious Northfield Mount Hermon School for a year before moving to Brown University, where she majored in Africana Studies and International Relations while obtaining her bachelor’s degree in political science.

During the years 2012 to 2015, DaCosta was a long-term collaborator with independent film producer and director Joshua Bee Alafia, with whom he collaborated on several projects. She and her husband welcomed their baby, Sankara, into the world in September 2013. When it was reported that DaCosta and Alafia had ended their relationship in November 2015, many people were shocked. D’Costa and Alafia were never formally married, according to widely disseminated claims.

The following year, DaCosta finished in second place on Cycle 3 of America’s Next Top Model and went on to have a long and successful modeling career in the United States. During the course of the competition, DaCosta only appeared in the bottom two positions on one other occasion. Her commercial credits include Garnier Fructis, Lincoln Townhouse, Oil of Olay (for which she worked at Radio Shack), Seda (for which she worked at Sephora), and Dr. Scholl’s. She has also been in commercials for Dr. Scholl’s and other brands.

She has been on the covers of a number of magazines, including W, Hype Hair, Splash, and Global Modeling, to name a few. After obtaining a position in the Tom Ford Fall/Winter 2014 ad campaign, she pursued her acting career in other roles. When he appeared as a guest star on an episode of the UPN sitcom Eve in 2005, DaCosta was considered to have made his acting debut. In 2006, she co-starred with Rob Brown, Antonio Banderas, and Alfre Woodard in the dance film Take the Lead, in which she was also nominated for an Academy Award.

Besides Honeydripper (2007) and The Messenger (2008), DaCosta has appeared in two independent films, both of which featured him in minor roles (2009). All My Children, an ABC soap opera, was the setting for her television debut in 2008, in which she played Cassandra Foster, the daughter of Angie Hubbard (Debbi Morgan).

Following a recent interview with All My Children’s new head writer, Charles Pratt Junior, it was revealed that DaCosta left the show sometime in August 2008, less than four months after joining the cast of the Broadway production of The First Breeze of Summer on Broadway, in order to join the cast of the Broadway production of The First Breeze of Summer on Broadway.

The First Breeze of Summer was a production by the renowned Negro Ensemble Company that ran from 2008 to 2009 as part of the company’s 50th-anniversary celebration. During the fourth and last season of the ABC comedy-drama series Ugly Betty, in which she played Nico Slater, the daughter of Wilhelmina Slater, she received a nomination for an Emmy Award.

A supporting role in the comedy-drama The Kids Are All Right and the science fiction action-adventure flick Tron: Legacy were both casts in DaCosta’s 2010 film debut, The Kids Are All Right. Following that, she made additional magazine appearances, including the cover of W (September 2010), an article in L’Officiel (November 2010), and an editorial in Vogue (December 2010) among others (in January 2011 by Patrick Demarchelier).

Earlier in 2013, she had a supporting role in the historical drama film The Butler, in which she shared the screen with Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. On CNN in 2015, it was stated that DaCosta would portray musical icon Whitney Houston in a Lifetime television film about her life, which would mark actress Angela Bassett’s directorial debut. Bassett had previously spoken with DaCosta about the project.

A lot of good comments were given to DaCosta for her performance. As well as Chicago Med, DaCosta appeared in the NBC medical drama Chicago Med, in which she played April Sexton (an emergency department nurse), from 2015 through 2021. After six seasons on Chicago Med, she announced on May 14, 2021, that she would be departing the program. She also announced that she will be joining Fox’s drama series Our Kind of People as Angela is ahead to her departure from Chicago Med.

Chicago Med will return for its seventh season this fall, but it will do so without its original cast member Yaya DaCosta, who will be replaced by a new member of the ensemble. It was announced that DaCosta, along with other original cast members Torrey DeVitto, had decided not to renew their contracts with the program.

This marked the end of an era for NBC’s popular medical drama, which had been running for more than a decade. While the cast of Medical has gone through its fair share of transformations over the years, there is little doubt that the departure of DaCosta’s Nurse April Sexton will be one of the show’s most difficult obstacles to overcome in the coming months and years.

With April being accepted into a Nurse Practitioner program in the season 6 finale, a potential exit storyline appeared to be laid out, and we believe that the writers will lean into this storyline to explain April’s absence when the next season debuts in January next year. According to a new interview with Deadline, the script for FOX’s upcoming drama Our Kind of People came across DaCosta’s desk while she was pondering whether or not to quit her job as a doctor at Chicago Medicine.

She became instantly enamored with the show almost from the beginning. Not only did the idea catch her curiosity and inspire her, but it also provided her with the extra bonus of the opportunity to collaborate with Lee Daniels, with whom she had previously collaborated on The Butler, which she was delighted about. “As I was preparing to leave Chicago Medical Center, the arrival of this concert occurred almost exactly at the same time as my departure. In terms of additional commentary, there isn’t much to offer.

According to DaCosta, there was an opening in the wall, with a question mark indicating whether I should stay or leave the building. Around that same period, I fell in love with Lee Daniels’ film Our Kind of People, and I jumped at the chance to work with him again after that. I first collaborated with him on The Butler, which took place many years ago now.”

The actress, despite her apparent fondness for Chicago Med, ultimately decided it was time to move on and pursue new acting chances. Yaya DaCosta has opened up about her unexpected departure from NBC’s Chicago Med after six seasons, as well as whether or not her involvement in Lee Daniels’ Our Kind of People, which premiered on Fox in September, played a role in her decision to leave. “When I was about to leave Chicago Med, the arrival of this show happened almost exactly at the same time as my departure.

In terms of additional commentary, there isn’t much to offer. In the distance, it appeared as though a window was ready to open, and I debated whether I should stay or leave. DaCosta made the announcement during the TCA panel discussion that took place on Wednesday at the program. Around that same period, I fell in love with Lee Daniels’ film Our Kind of People, and I jumped at the chance to work with him again after that. I first collaborated with him on The Butler, which took place many years ago now.”

As a result, I felt it was essential for me to bring up a number of characteristics of my personality that I think was particularly important to explore throughout our conversations. I really want to have good fun with these serious themes and make them entertaining,” said the cast. In Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, the series is based on the book Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class by Lawrence Otis Graham.

The series is set in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for more than 50 years. Angela Vaughn (DaCosta) is a strong-willed single mother who embarks on a journey to rehabilitate her family’s reputation while also making a difference with her pioneering hair care product, which emphasizes the inherent, natural beauty of African-American females.

Despite this, she soon uncovers a horrifying secret about her mother’s past that would completely upend her world as well as the entire neighborhood as a result. Our sort of people stars Kyle Bary, Lance Gross, and Nadine Ellis, in addition to Morris Chestnut and Joe Morgan, including Alana Bright, Rhyon Nicole Brown, and Debbi Morgan, among others. The film, which will be released on September 21st, will also feature L. Scott Caldwell and L. Scott Caldwel in a cameo part, among others.
