Al B. Sure!, real name Albert Joseph Brown III, was born on June 4, 1968, and is an American singer, composer, record producer, radio broadcaster, and ex-record executive. His upbringing was split between Boston and Mount Vernon, New York, after his birth. In the ’80s and ’90s, Brown was a major force in the sexy side of the new jack swing, both as a performer and an innovator in the music industry. He was born to nuclear medical technician Albert Joseph Brown II and bookkeeper Cassandra Brown. Brown was the starting quarterback for the Mount Vernon High School football team in New York, but he turned down a football scholarship to the University of Iowa to pursue a career in music instead. Brown was the first ever Sony Innovators Talent Search grand prize winner, chosen by Quincy Jones in 1987. He continued to collaborate with Jones, most notably on “The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite),” a platinum song from Jones’ double-platinum album Back on the Block released in 1990.

Brown was one member of a quartet consisting of Barry White, El DeBarge, and James Ingram for this recording. More than three million copies of Brown’s first album, In Effect Mode (1988), were sold. The album also spent seven consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard R&B chart. It included the singles “Off on Your Own (Girl)” and “Nite and Day,” both of which topped the R&B chart and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.  He was nominated for many Grammys and American Music Awards (AMAs), and he ultimately took home the trophy for Best New R&B Artist. Additionally, he was nominated for multiple Soul Train Awards and ultimately took home the trophy for Best New Artist. Brown took home many New York Music Awards, too. Plus, his 1-900 phone line brought in the third-most money, behind the New Kids on the Block and Run-D.M.C. lines.
