Amy Klobuchar Bio
Amy Klobuchar, full name Amy Jean Klobuchar (born May 25, 1960 in Plymouth, Minnesota, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2006 and took office the following year. She was the first woman elected to that parliament to represent the state.
Klobuchar grew raised in a Minneapolis–St. Paul suburb. Her father was a columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and her mother was an elementary school teacher. Klobuchar, who graduated as the valedictorian of her high school class, attended Yale University, where she earned a magna cum laude degree in 1982. Her final thesis, “Uncovering the Dome,” examined the politics behind the construction of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis (1986). After graduating from the University of Chicago with a law degree in 1985, she worked as a legal adviser to former Vice President Walter Mondale, who urged her to pursue a career in politics. She married John Bessler about that period, and the pair later had a kid.
Klobuchar was elected attorney of Hennepin county in 1998, and served in that capacity from 1999 to 2006. She served as president of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association during that time. In 2006, following Sen. Mark Dayton’s announcement that he would not seek reelection, she ran for his seat on the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) platform. She won a landslide victory against her Republican opponent and took office in 2007.
Once elected to the Senate, Klobuchar earned a reputation as a political liberal who often voted with her party, yet she demonstrated a willingness to engage in bipartisan negotiations. She arranged a significant financial package for the reconstruction of a highway bridge that collapsed in August 2007 over the Mississippi River. Additionally, as befits an agricultural state, she championed various farm measures and had a special interest in veterans’ affairs. Additionally, she was involved in a large modification of the Senate’s ethical rules, as well as foreign commerce projects and efforts to increase funding for secondary and university-level science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. Klobuchar received great grades for her office’s transparency. She handily won reelection in 2012 and again in 2018.
Klobuchar launched her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 the next year. Klobuchar, who ran as a moderate, struggled to establish traction in a crowded field and withdrew from the race in March 2020. She was later mentioned as a possible running mate for Joe Biden, the expected contender. However, the death of an African American man in the custody of Minnesota police heightened attention to racial justice and cast doubt on Klobuchar’s prosecutorial record. In June 2020, she withdrew her name from consideration, stating that the vice presidential nominee should be a woman of colour. Biden eventually chose Sen. Kamala Harris.
Biden defeated Trump in the November 3 election. Trump and some Republicans, on the other hand, questioned the results, alleging massive voting fraud despite a dearth of evidence. Klobuchar and other members of Congress convened on January 6, 2021, to certify Biden’s victory, but the meeting was abruptly delayed when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol. Several hours passed during the terrible siege. Many accused Trump of encouraging the uprising, and on January 13, a week before his term expired, the House impeached him. In February, the Senate trial began, and Klobuchar voted to convict Trump, but he was acquitted by a vote of 57–43.
Klobuchar is the author of many books, including The Senator Next Door (2015) and Antitrust: Confronting Monopoly Power from the Gilded Age to the Digital Age (2017). (2021).
