In 1979, Anita Ward released the disco song “Ring My Bell,” which became a top-ten success in the United States and the United Kingdom. Ward, who was born on December 20, 1957, in Memphis, Tennessee, has always loved music, especially gospel. Later, she released an unknown CD with her own gospel quartet and sang with the Rust College A Cappella Choir (where she sang with legendary Metropolitan Opera soprano Leontyne Price).
However, Ward didn’t plan on a future in music and instead became a substitute teacher in the Memphis public school system when he graduated. After realising that she couldn’t deny the importance of music in her life, Ward reached out to singer/songwriter Frederick Knight (who had a major success in the summer of 1972 with “I’ve Been Lonely for So Long”) via her manager. Originally, Knight was just supposed to assist in creating a three-song demo session with Ward, but once the tape started rolling, he was so impressed with Ward’s voice that he decided to help Ward record a whole album. Both realised after listening to their recordings that they were still missing a song, so Knight dug out “Ring My Bell,” a tune he had written years before for a much younger singer named Stacy Lattisaw (who would go on to have numerous successes in the early ’80s).
