Guitarist, singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer from the USA. He attended Berklee College of Music after initially learning guitar from Joe Satriani. He first worked with Frank Zappa in 1978 as a transcriptionist, then joined the band in 1980, which lasted until 1983. He established his own professional recording studio and started making music with his bands, the Classified and 777. In January of 1984, he released this material as his first solo album titled Flex-Able.

Vai took over for Yngwie Malmsteen as Alcatrazz’s guitarist, and he contributed to the band’s “Disturbing The Peace” album. Soon after David Lee Roth’s departure from Van Halen, Vai decided to leave the group and form his solo band.
