Bill Brodrick, the first of Robert and Clar Brodrick’s children, entered the world on July 25, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father was in the United States Army during World War II, so he and his mother stayed with relatives in Indiana and Michigan. He moved back to Cincinnati after serving his country. Bill left Purcell High School with the Class of 1956. In 1960, Bill bought a brand-new Corvette, which sparked a fascination with fast automobiles and racing. As a result, I was able to help several racing buddies with their Maserati 200si and Cooper Formula Junior. While working as a motorsports reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Bill started presenting a racing radio show on WNOP in Newport, Kentucky in 1964. He eventually went to WKRC radio/tv (Taft Broadcasting) in Cincinnati.
Bill began working as the Supervisor of Public Relations for the Racing Division at Union Oil Co. of California (Union 76) on January 1, 1969. A job he kept for a total of 29 years. Thousands of Bill’s racing fans all around the nation grew to know and love him as “The Hat Man.” Bill introduced some semblance of the discipline into the chaos of racing’s victory lane celebrations by coordinating the donning of sponsor hats by race winners. When spectators spotted him but could not quite place his face, they started referring to him as “the Hat Man” in the racing world. He has staffed the winners’ circle at every single racing event ever held, no matter where in the globe it may have taken place.
Bill lost his job when Union Oil was sold in 1997, so he purchased a bar in his hometown of Algonquin, Illinois. He closed shop after 12 successful years because of the economy. Now he often visits automobile exhibits, auctions, and charity races. A judge at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, he happily signs collectors’ cards in his spare time. Also on the Bolus & Snopes racing team, Bill serves as Group Commander of the Aeroship Division. After participating in the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans Expedition Team, Bill received the Corvette Crossed Flags Award from GM Racing in September 2015.
