Brett Lewis Anderson, born in England on September 29, 1967, is a musician and songwriter for the band Suede. He temporarily led The Tears in 2004 and then went on to create four solo albums in which he played guitar and keyboards after the dissolution of Suede in 2003. In the early days of Suede, Anderson was noted for his androgynous look as well as his unusual wide-ranging voice, literary lyrics, dynamic and charismatic stage presence, and magnetic stage presence. Following their 2010 reformation, Suede has continued to release new music and do live shows. Anderson, Mat Osman on bass, and Simon Gilbert on drums are the only constants from the band’s start; they’re joined by the rest of the band on every Suede album. Anderson was born and grew up in Lindfield, Sussex, a hamlet two miles (3 km) northeast of Haywards Heath.

Anderson says his cab driver’s father was an “obsessive classical-music aficionado” and that his mother was an artist and a seamstress. He started his education at Lindfield Junior School, continued it at Oathall Comprehensive, and finished it at Haywards Heath Sixth Form College. Anderson played guitar in garage bands like The Pigs and Geoff when he was a teenager; Osman of future Suede fame was a member of Geoff. Anderson and Osman created Suede in the late 1980s with Anderson’s then-girlfriend Justine Frischmann when they were all students at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London. They quickly recruited guitarist Bernard Butler via an ad in the NME. Temporarily bolstered by former Smiths drummer Mike Joyce, the band finally found their permanent percussionist in 1991 with the addition of Simon Gilbert.
