American singing, film, and stage actor Carlton Earl “Carl” Anderson (February 27, 1945 – February 23, 2004) was perhaps best remembered for his performance of Judas Iscariot in the stage and film adaptations of Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. “Friends and Lovers,” a duet performed by Anderson and singer-actress Gloria Loring, peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986.
Anderson was one of James and Alberta Anderson’s 12 children and was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. Anderson joined the Air Force during his junior year of high school and worked as a communications technician for two years. He moved back to Lynchburg to finish high school and earned his diploma in 1965.
After graduating high school with honors, Anderson joined the service and began performing at military posts around the United States for the World Wide Air Force Talent Contest.In 1969, Anderson relocated to the nation’s capital and, with several friends, created a band called “The Second Eagle,” for which he was the lead vocalist. The Second Eagle played a variety of jazz and rock songs, including a few from the album Jesus Christ Superstar, which had been published years before any plans were set in stone for a theatrical performance. The show’s songs were performed by Anderson at St. Stephen’s Church in 1971 when a talent representative from the William Morris Agency heard them and felt that he had promise as a solo artist.
